Jet helmet: Classic in the form of early pilot helmets. Cool only without an umbrella. Sun or aviator goggles are compulsory. Better protection and better equipment than with the half-shell, nose and chin are still at great risk.

Roller helmet: Modern variant of the open face helmet. The foldable visor saves glasses and protects the whole face from insect attacks. Not only popular with practical scooter riders. Accident protection as with the jet helmet.

Police helmet: crossing of a half-shell with a jet helmet. The slightly further pulled down sides offer in the event of a fall
a little more protection than the half-shell. In contrast to the jet, an umbrella is required here.

Full-face helmet: The best in terms of face and accident protection. The often high weight and the not always optimal ventilation are the disadvantages of full protection. Donning and doffing are a cumbersome ritual, especially for those who wear glasses. Some people also feel trapped and uncomfortable in an integral helmet.

Braincap: This light “brain cap” is popular among chopper / cruiser pilots and offers even less protection than the half-shell. Legally speaking, you are in a gray area, strictly speaking
is it not a “motorcycle helmet”.

Sports full-face helmet: spoilers, air scoops, great paintwork in replica design, mirrored (accessory) visors make the expensive athletes conspicuous. Removable and washable interior fittings make them practical, among other things.

Flip-up helmet: Jet helmet comfort when putting on and taking off as well as during the cigarette break, full-face helmet protection while driving – that works. Small disadvantages: their usually slightly higher weight and, in extreme cases, the not quite as stable chin parts.

Enduro helmet: The right helmet for off-road trips: shell structure like a full-face helmet, without a visor, but with a larger field of vision and enough space for cross goggles. The lining can usually be removed and washed.

Streetfighter helmet: Its main task, besides protecting the head, is to look evil. The shape, which originates from (US) automobile sport, has serious disadvantages for bikers: small field of vision, high weight, too simple a visor mechanism.

Streetfighter flip-up helmet: This helmet is representative of other, mostly very exotic solutions that combine different designs (unfortunately often only the disadvantages), but have very little market significance.

Half shell: mother of all helmets: shell at the top, leather at the bottom. If you can still buy a new one, it is legally considered a motorcycle helmet.
Popular with classic car drivers. Advantages: light, airy, iconic. Disadvantages: very modest protection.

What should I put attention on?

The key to choosing a motorcycle helmet is its fit. This in turn depends very much on the head of the helmet wearer, which is why general statements are difficult. But we have a number of tips on what to look out for when buying a helmet.

This is what the ECE sew-in looks like. The circled E-number codes the country of homologation, 11 stands for the United Kingdom. The series of numbers begins with the standard (22) and its amendment (05), followed by the approval number (0103), the marking / P for full-face helmets and a manufacturer-specific production number (006522)

A helmet that is too big can slip, which is disruptive when driving and increases the risk of injury in the event of a fall. A helmet that is too small causes pressure points, and in the long run it may even cause pain. In any case, it dramatically reduces the level of wellbeing, the fun of driving and the ability to concentrate.

So the first basic rule when buying a helmet is: bring the time to put on and compare as many models as possible.

The second basic rule is: only buy helmets with an ECE patch. It usually sits on the chin strap and meets the minimum requirements for use as a motorcycle helmet. ECE 22-05 is currently valid. The note / P on the ECE sew-on label indicates a helmet that has passed the chin protection test, / PN or / J indicates a jet helmet.

Fit of a motorcycle helmet

Clear case of “Helmet too big”: The head can be clearly moved in the helmet.

The forehead circumference gives an indication of the correct helmet size – no more and no less. Since the sizes and Fits Since the helmets sometimes turn out differently even within one brand, thorough trying on is mandatory. Wearers of glasses wear their glasses, of course, because not all helmets offer enough space. The same applies to those who wear balaclavas and / or earplugs.

Usually there are two or three shell sizes for each helmet model; the manufacturers realize the eight clothing sizes between XXS and 3XL or 50/51 and 64/65 different thicknesses of upholstery. If the padding is too thick, it can sit down and make the helmet too loose. This occurs mainly in medium-sized models that are produced in only two shell sizes. Above all, leave such candidates on their heads for 15 minutes for a test.

A helmet is too big, though …

  • … two fingers fit between the head and the helmet in the forehead area.
  • … the head can turn in the held helmet.
  • … he can be pulled from his head with the chin strap closed.

A helmet is too small, though …

  • … it causes bruises or pain.
  • … the chinstrap only closes under strong tension.
  • … the helmet shell significantly restricts the field of vision all around.

If you have narrowed the selection of candidates to one or two, it is worth asking about a test drive option on your own motorcycle. In half an hour of mixed operation (city, intercity, expressway), you usually notice any weaknesses and inadequacies of a helmet, such as a severely restricted field of vision in a sporty driving position, excessive wind noise or unsuitable ventilation.

Closure of the chinstrap

Key lock on the helmet chinstrap.

There are essentially three ways of locking the chinstrap: mortise lock, ratchet and double-D.

That Mortise lock is the cheapest version and is therefore often found in low-priced helmets in particular. Your disadvantage: Over time, the chin strap widens and has to be readjusted so that it is tight enough. Often you forget that, or you shy away from fiddling – at the expense of safety

Ratchet on the helmet chinstrap.

the ratchet is closed as tightly as it is necessary each time it is put on. At first glance it looks a bit more cumbersome than the mortise lock, but after tightening it three times you have internalized the principle. Opening is at least as easy as with a mortise lock.

Double-D fastener on the helmet chinstrap.

the Double D closure is particularly common in sporty full-face helmets. It weighs a few grams less than the ratchet, is continuously adjusted every time it is tightened and is therefore ideal with a view to safety. Its disadvantages: It takes a little longer to teach your blind fingers to thread and secure the protruding strap end – and the same procedure backwards when taking off the helmet.

Equipment of a motorcycle helmet

In addition, many equipment details play a role in the purchase decision. For example, how easy is it to get started? A tight ruff can be uncomfortable here. But the denser the Neck finish, the quieter the helmet is when driving.

How easy is that Remove and reinstall the visor? The lighter it is, the lower the hurdle to clean it thoroughly. If you first have to look for a tiny Allen key or a screwdriver, you tend to avoid doing the necessary work.

Can the visor, the ventilation elements and possibly the sun visor also work well? operate with gloves?

Is this Helmet padding firmly glued or fastened with snaps so that it can be removed for cleaning?

Heard accesories like an anti-fog visor (“Pinlock”), Wind deflector or a storage bag (do not underestimate: protects helmet and visor from scratches on the shelf!) Included?

Elaborate designs cost extra.

Clearly: Security is not skimpy. But if all safety-relevant aspects are met, the question of the price of a helmet still arises – and how it can be kept low.

Two Features are usually not up for debate: the sun visor (so that you don’t have to fiddle around with sunglasses or interchangeable visors on longer tours) and removable pads (to be able to wash away sweat easily after a longer tour.

You can easily save in the three-digit range if you deal with a simple paintwork instead of the latest racing replica design. The truism: At the end of the season, high-quality discontinued goods are particularly cheap.

If the decision between two helmets is difficult, it can be worthwhile to look into the Prices for interchangeable visors to ask. These vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, sometimes between 30 and over 100 euros. That can already influence a purchase decision.

If you buy an interchangeable visor, possibly an anti-fog pinlock inner visor or other accessories, you might be able to get one Package price negotiate.
