The Cardo systems, which have already been presented at EICMA in Milan, are intended to make communication on the motorcycle easier and safer than before, because the driver’s own language and corresponding commands are used for control.

Suffice it to say “Hey, Cardo” address and name the desired action. The corresponding standard commands such as radio off / on, music off / on, next station, speed dial or battery indicator are shown in the operating instructions. The two new ones Cardo Communication systems are also fully compatible with the Siri voice recognition systems from Apple and Ok Google, so smartphones can also be integrated and controlled without any problems.

Dynamic groups of up to 15 drivers

Only very few functions are operated manually, control is mainly by voice.

The networking of the voice-controlled systems with one another is already known. Many other systems rely on Bluetooth as the standard, Cardo has been using DMC technology (Dynamic Mesh Communication) since 2015. While with Bluetooth all drivers can only be linked one behind the other like a chain in a 200-meter cloud and thus all are tied to their driving positions, DMC can network the entire group with one another.

This allows up to 15 riders to communicate with each other over a distance of up to eight kilometers – even when changing positions within the motorcycle group. The dynamic network readjusts itself in fractions of a second when changing positions and automatically maintains the connections. Thanks to noise suppression, the speech should also be transmitted in brilliant quality. Private chats are also possible between two participants in the group without others being able to listen. In addition, non-DMC-capable devices can also be integrated into the communication via Bluetooth.

Range up to 8 kilometers

In terms of equipment, Packtalk Bold and Packtalk Slim are almost identical. With its external antenna, Bold offers a greater range: from bike to bike up to 1.6 kilometers, in a group up to 8 kilometers, depending on the terrain. For Slim, Cardo gives 1.2 and 6 kilometers respectively. There are also differences in the helmet speaker equipment. Bold relies on two 40s systems, the Slim combines a 40s with a 32s loudspeaker. The weight of the systems is given as around 60 grams.

Both systems are now available in stores. Cardo offers Packtalk Bold and Packtalk Slim as a single system for 329.95 euros, the duo package costs 549.95 euros.

Cardo Pack Talk Slim in a practical test

Controlling by language needs to be practiced.

In the practical test, the Cardo Pack Talk Slim system impressed with its excellent audio quality, extremely compact design and low weight. Despite the small dimensions, the keys could be used relatively accurately after a bit of getting used to with thin sports gloves. With thicker gloves, the accuracy decreases significantly.

Successful voice control requires learning all standard commands by heart, and the microphone in the helmet must be positioned absolutely precisely, otherwise the voice commands will not work. If the system understands the address, it also reacts promptly. In many cases, however, several attempts are necessary. We found it annoying that all group participants had to overhear all voice commands of all participants. No matter who changes the channel, changes the volume or jumps to the next song – everyone else in the group hears the command. Speaking of radio – the system does not have its own search and can only access six preset stations. In order to select this, the Pack Talk system must be linked to the computer and to the Cardo Community. There, the desired transmitters can be configured in the personal profile and then loaded onto the helmet system. However, fixed frequencies are stored. Anyone who leaves the corresponding broadcast environment on the way also loses reception.

We determined the range from bike to bike in the admittedly topographically difficult Black Forest to be around 500 meters.

The initial set-up of the system and the group configuration proved to be demanding for communication beginners. Coupling with the smartphone, on the other hand, is playful. The phone also saved – we paired an iPhone with Siri – went smoothly. Calls could be set up and accepted, or navigation started.
