The Continetal e-scooter already made its debut at INTERMOT 2018, there, however, behind closed doors and only in front of a select audience. At EICMA 2018, the general public was able to take a look at the electric scooter. MOTORRAD now had the opportunity to try out the electric scooter.

E-motor from the auto parts shelf

The Conti e-scooter looks like an old acquaintance, it is more or less, because Conti uses a Vespa GTS 125 as a base. The Italian with the classic shapes remains optically unchanged. Only the missing exhaust muffler on the right side and of course the strong Conti orange in which the Vespa is wrapped are striking.

The Conti electric drive is inconspicuously integrated into the original drive unit swing arm. The 48-volt motor is a high-volume component and is also installed in a similar form by Conti as a belt drive in various mild hybrid drives for cars. Conti specifies 9.6 kW as output, while the original combustion engine of the Vespa has 10.5 kW. The drive torque is transmitted to the rear wheel via a belt drive. In the prototype, the electric motor is powered by a 2.6 kWh lithium-ion battery that sits on the motor under the helmet compartment.

Get on, ignition on – nonsense, turn on the power supply with the ignition key and press the start button. The green control lamp in the cockpit shows that the electric drive is now armed. The right turns the throttle and the Conti e-scooter starts moving almost silently, but emphatically. When sprinting to 50 km / h, the electrician takes almost a second off the combustion engine. The Conti e-scooter is four seconds ahead up to a speed of 80 km / h. The pressure of the electric motor only decreases noticeably at 90 km / h, after which it only goes on slowly. In terms of top speed, both should be level with just over 100 km / h. However, it could not be driven out. The firm propulsion ensures that the driver grins every time “electricity” is given, while the e-scooter that flits past as quietly as a whisper makes the audience visibly happy.

No more fun is when the road surface gets worse. Because Conti only took care of the drive, the chassis is just as uncomfortable and unwilling to swallow as on the series Vespa. Almost the most important criterion for an e-scooter? Sure, range. Conti specifies around 75 kilometers here. The combustion Vespa comes to almost 300. Because the Conti e-scooter is only a prototype built purely for test purposes, the last word has not yet been spoken, according to the Conti developers. If the electric drive is ever offered to other manufacturers, the range can be topped up with other battery options.
