With Dakar 18, a new racing game for PC, PS4 and Xbox One has been on the store shelves since the end of September. We were allowed to try out the rally simulation. Here are our first impressions.

Anyone who has always wanted to replay the Dakar Rally on their video game console or PC has recently had the opportunity thanks to Dakar 18, which was developed by Bigmoon Entertainment. Players have the opportunity to master the Dakar Rally in a car, motorcycle, quad, buggy or truck. However, like the real Dakar Rally, this is not an easy undertaking. First of all, the huge and largely open game world is a real challenge. If you are traveling by car, your English-speaking co-pilot will give you instructions. On the motorcycle and quad, you have to navigate yourself using the road book, which is not that easy. If the player loses orientation, the vehicle can be returned to the last checkpoint using a command.

Adventure mode in focus

In addition to the adventure mode, in which players can re-enact the Dakar Rally, there are also modes of exploration (tutorial), training and treasure hunt, in which pilots go in search of various items such as artifacts. Various multiplayer modes are also implemented, which can be played either online or locally (split screen or via LAN on the PC).

Beginners should initially forego motorcycles and start with the rally cars.

As in the real Dakar Rally, players can leave their vehicles to interact in the event of a breakdown. For example, stuck cars can be pulled out of the sand with a cable. The developers are also giving Dakar 18 a damage model that actually has mechanical effects on the respective vehicles. An official license is also included, which means that many different Dakar drivers and vehicles can be selected. Incidentally, the stage lengths are not completely true to the original. But don’t worry: the available stages are not short. But on the contrary. Sometimes you are on the road for a long time until all the checkpoints of a stage have been grazed.

Motorcycles much more difficult than cars

To get started, we recommend driving by car, truck and buggy. The ride on motorcycles and quads is much more demanding and not easy to master. As mentioned at the beginning, the co-pilot is not available for the latter two. But also the control and the associated driving behavior is much more difficult. Incidentally, there are three different levels of difficulty in total.

The bottom line is that Dakar 18 knows how to please with the large game world, the official licenses, the different vehicle classes, the atmosphere including weather effects, the scope, the stylish graphics and the multiplayer modes. Even so, the game didn’t seem fully developed when it was released. Driving physics, enemy AI and the complicated navigation couldn’t convince, for example. By the way, the developers have now made several updates to improve the gaming experience and fix some bugs. It can be assumed that further updates will be delivered later. Dakar 18 is currently available for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Cost: approx. 50 euros.
