Double victory show for the final

The International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) in Hockenheim ended with a great final. Although the champions in three classes had already been determined, in front of an enthusiastic crowd, in which the former Grand Prix star Ralf Waldmann and ex-Supersport world champion Jorg Teuchert were spotted, every position was fought to the last corner. There were even double victories in three of the four IDM classes.

In bright sunshine, the spectators made a pilgrimage to the Baden Motodrom, where the IDM finals traditionally take place.

For Markus Reiterberger it was the last big appearance in Germany’s highest motorcycle road racing series. The three-time Superbike champion is returning to top international business and will compete in the Superstock 1000 European Championship in 2018

After an initial bitter lull, the Bavarian refueled at the IDM at his own request. As expected, he said goodbye to his colleagues and fans with a BMW double victory.

The battle for the runner-up title raged behind the prematurely crowned champion in Hockenheim. Yamaha works rider Florian Alt arrived with the same number of points as Reiterberger’s team-mate and local hero Jan Buhn. For Buhn, the chances of the runner-up fell after the first race when he finished fifth, but Florian Alt came in second. In the second race, too, he had to give way to the Gummersbacher. That was the end of the matter.

Five motorcycle brands took part in the IDM in 2017: BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. All of them made it into the top ten at least once last weekend. Kawasaki lady Lucy Glockner, the only woman in the top class of the German racing circuit, had to line up in the second run after a mediocre start in 14th position, but fought her way forward and even ousted Dominic, who was a World Cup winner, in the last lap Schmitter on his Suzuki from ninth place.

In the IDM Supersport 600, Thomas Gradinger from Austria was also the champion. The race in the final was made by Kevin Wahr, who had long been one of the potential title contenders. The Nagold had to bury its hopes after a technical defect and a wrong decision in the tire choice. With a double victory at the end, however, Wahr showed that he can be expected again at any time. Overall third was Max Enderlein from Saxony, who, like the first placed, was on a Yamaha.

The title in the small Supersport 300 class, in which the youngsters have a chance, has not yet been awarded. The decision had to be made between the two Freudenberg teammates Maximilian Kappler and Jan-Ole Jahnig. Jahnig was 19 points ahead, but Kappler, who has already competed three times in the world championship at the Sachsenring, wanted to keep his chances. He won both races on his 20th birthday. It wasn’t enough to win the title. Jahnig crossed the finish line right behind him and was able to draw on his points account. The 16-year-old goes down in IDM history as the first master of the new class.

In the end, Josef Sattler / Uwe Neubert broke free in the IDM Sidecar. It celebrated its first win of the season and came in ahead of the almost unbeatable master duo Markus Schlosser / Thomas Hofer.

In the second race the old order was restored. Andre Kretzer / Manfred Wechselberger secured the runner-up here.

In addition, points were fought for in three cup classes. As usual, Hockenheim offered non-stop action on and off the track. Will there be a reunion in 2018?
