As the district of Wolfenbuttel explains in a message, all measures such as more frequent traffic controls, speed limits and signs in the district of Wolfenbuttel to defuse the risk of accidents on the K 83 between Werlaburgdorf and Altenrode were of no use.

Therefore, the district has now decided to close this 3-kilometer route to motorcyclists from April 1st to October 31st. The prohibition signs have already been put up, the route closure is effective immediately. The driving-through ban applies from the Werlaburgdorf exit in the direction of Altenrode and from the Altenrode manor to the Werlaburgdorf entrance. An exception applies to residents with motorbikes within the towns. According to the district, violations of the ban will be punished as an administrative offense.

Too high number of accidents

13, in some cases serious motorcycle accidents since 2014, the route became the focus of the authorities. A maximum speed of 50 km / h applies at the focus of the accident, which is often ignored. “None of the measures implemented prevented the accidents or induced motorcyclists to drive appropriately. The ordered blocking is therefore justified and also proportionate due to the exception for residents and the time limit, ”says the order of the public order office.

A closure for motorcycles on this route has been discussed since 2015. In April 2017, the maximum speed in front of the curve was set at 70 km / h and in the curve at 50 km / h. In August of the same year, signs were put up together with the traffic watch and announced in the local press as an “appeal to reason”. This did not help – the driver continued to drive too fast and exceeded the maximum speed. In June 2017 as well as in April and May 2018 there were further accidents with excessive speed. The district of Wolfenbuttel is therefore forced to ban this part of the K 83 for motorcycles in order to avoid accidents.

The Federal Association of Motorcyclists (BVDM) wants to try to enter into a dialogue with the authorities and work to ensure that the blockade is lifted. Should the dialogue fail, legal action is also a possibility to withdraw the blocking. With the experience from previous proceedings, the BVDM points out that the grounds for blocking a lawsuit are unlikely to hold up.
