The Husqvarna Vitpilen 1301 could look like this: reduced, clear, with classic and modern elements.

Faster than expected

The Vitpilen 401 and the big sister 701 are not yet on the road, apparently with the Husqvarna Vitpilen 1301 in the background the coronation of the series is warming up.

You shouldn’t weigh every word from KTM boss Stefan Pierer on the gold scales. But it is always worth listening carefully when he outlines the future of his brands. Like last year (2015) in the MOTORRAD interview: “What we’re doing now is pretty aggressive. In addition to the off-roaders, we will offer a complete range of Husqvarna street bikes from 125 to 390 cubic centimeters (…). And we will do the same (…) with our engines from the 690 single cylinder to the 1300 Super Duke engine. These motorcycles will clearly be Husqvarna’s, with a very different concept to the respective KTM model. ”The study of the Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 at EICMA 2015, among others, proved that these words are followed by deeds.

Clearly more power naked than power cruiser

And now the big sister, Husqvarna Vitpilen 1301? To be honest, MOTORRAD initially expected a different concept, namely a power cruiser based on the Ducati XDiavel model. Stefan Pierer and KTM designer Gerald Kiska had already spoken about this in public several times. Pierer had announced such a motorcycle for 2019. In fact, an XDiavel and a Harley V-Rod Muscle were included on the secret KTM test drives that were used to take the photos of this article for internal comparison.

But: This new Husqvarna Vitpilen 1301 has as much in common with a power cruiser as the extremely reduced rear end as the KTM boss’s pronounced self-confidence with an inferiority complex. The technical similarity to the facelift of the 1290 Super Duke R, photographed in the same place, however – which had to go under the knife anyway because of Euro 4 – is as astonishing as it is revealing. The chance that we will see the Husqvarna counterpart to the powerful Super Duke R here is more than likely. However, this does not rule out the possibility that a Power Cruiser from KTM and / or Husqvarna will follow in the foreseeable future. A perfect, if not “the” perfect engine for it is already on the shelf at KTM. Smooth running right down to the bottom of the rev range, with even power delivery and fine throttle response – these are systems that also look great on a cruiser. This should also have been proven by these comparison drives.

However, the Husqvarna Vitpilen 1301 is clearly more Power Naked than Power Cruiser. And clearly more Husqvarna than KTM. Husky attributes such as the organically rounded front spoiler and the oval, rather dominant tank bulges in the style of the small 401 and 701, from which the large 1301 also has the typical horizontal lines of the tank and seat bench, are unmistakable. Even if only in rudiments, because even for Stefan Pierer and Husqvarna, the laws of physics still apply. In other words: While you still manage to cling to the handlebars with full power on the smaller single cylinders on the potty-level seat, a 1300 with over 140 Newton meters and more than 170 hp will almost certainly stretch the front wheel towards the sky first and then hers Driver to the ground.

“State-of-the-art components, no recycled scrap”

So it is better to lower formal requirements and risk a little seat depression. The handlebar halves, which are positioned significantly lower, also help in this regard. At the same time, they have a tremendous impact on identity, as they underline the street sporting husky line that has been adopted and thus help the entire family to develop an asphalt bond, which is in contrast to the KTM Duke gang’s still existing off-road proximity.

It remains to be seen how far the design solutions of the Husqvarna Vitpilen 1301 will make it into series production. The ultra-short stub tail is currently nothing more than a cladding of the tubular spaceframe, which, like the entire frame, including wheels and chassis components, is apparently taken over from the Super Duke R. The only obvious difference: The brackets for the passenger footrests are screwed to the rear frame on the KTM 1290 Super Duke R, while the Husqvarna has brackets on the main frame that also hold the silencer. The fact that there are passenger footrests at all underlines the provisional character of this rear view. Where there are footrests, there is also a seat – one should assume. However, the rear light integrated in the license plate holder also shows that it won’t be really cozy in the second row.

But sofa comfort would only partially match the reduced Husqvarna image. “The new Classics”, Stefan Pierer once said, “that is the Husqvarna theme. With state-of-the-art components, no recycled scrap. ”He is sure that something like that would get the boys back on their bikes. Is it true? So far, Pierer’s prophecies have mostly come true.
