Nevertheless, the European motorcycle manufacturer association ACEM recorded a significant increase in business in May and June. The first four months of the year were so marked by the Corona crisis that the decrease in registrations compared to the previous year was still an average of 32.7 percent.

Germany’s strongest market

The motorcycle market with the highest number of registrations in Europe in the first six months was Germany with 111,634 new motorcycle registrations. Italy follows with 106,507 new motorcycle registrations. The third largest market was France with 91,093 new registrations. Spain had 62,268 new registrations, Great Britain 41,710.

E-motorcycles are on the rise

If we look at the new registrations of electric motorcycles, Spain is absolutely dominant here. In the first half of 2020, 3,095 electric motorcycles were brought onto the market there. There were 1,347 new registrations of electric motorcycles in Italy and 1,340 in France. There are only 1,045 newly registered electric motorcycles in Germany. E-motorcycles hardly get a plug in the socket in Great Britain. Just 257 of them were newly registered here. Despite the crisis, 7,084 e-motorcycles were registered in the first half of 2020, 47 percent more than in the previous year.

Moped market is shrinking

The market for mopeds, i.e. motorized two-wheelers with up to 50 cm³ displacement, also had to give up in the first half of the year. In the largest European markets (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain) a total of 110,613 two-wheelers were brought onto the market – 6.9 percent less than in the first half of 2019.

The moped market with the highest number of registrations in the first half of the year was in the Netherlands with 36,327 new registrations, just ahead of France with 36,304 new registrations, Belgium with 11,909 new registrations, Germany with 9,665, Italy with 8,669 and Spain with 7,739.

The ACEM counted mopeds with electric drive, a total of 24,691, 2.0 percent less than in the previous year. The largest e-moped market was also the Netherlands with 7,737 electric vehicles. This is followed by Belgium (6,521), France (4,415), Spain (3,495) and Italy (2,523). The ACEM statistics do not show any data for Germany.
