The Italians also love the BMW GS
Sure, the real new registration kings among motorized two-wheelers in Italy are of course the 125, 150 and 300 cubic scooters. But we also paid special attention to the motorcycle ranking.

If we look at the overall ranking of new Italian registrations for motorized two-wheelers over 125 cc, then the Honda SH 150 and SH 300 scooters and the Piaggio Beverly 300 ABS are on the podium. The most popular motorcycle follows in fourth place – the BMW R 1200 GS / Adventure with 5,797 units.
The second most popular motorcycle in Italy last year was the Honda Africa Twin. In the mixed statistics, it ranks 9th with 3,216 registrations. This means that in the top 10 motorized two-wheelers over 125 cm³ there are 8 large scooters and two bikes – the GS and the Africa Twin.

In Germany only one scooter in the top 20
For comparison: In Germany, the Vespa GTS 300 ranks third behind the BMW R 1200 GS and Yamaha MT-07, pushing the Kawasaki Z 650 from the podium to fourth. But that’s it. The second most popular scooter in Germany last year was the Vespa MP3 500 LT, and with a total of 886 new registrations it only made it to 34th place – between the Yamaha MT-10 and the Suzuki V-Strom 650.

Top 20 motorcycles in Italy over 125 cc
Italy is number 1 in Europe when it comes to registrations of motorized two-wheelers over 50 cubic meters: it was 204,579 units in 2017. With 140,667 new registrations, Germany is still in third place behind the French (162,808 new registrations), but let’s only look at motorcycles over 125 cubic, the picture changes. In Germany 100,128 bikes were registered in the previous year, in Italy it was 74,172 units.
To make the statistics comparable, we left out the scooters that are so popular in Italy and looked at the TOP 20 motorcycles over 125 cubic meters. Many of the most popular bikes in Germany are also among the Italians in the favorites list, but with the exception of the BMW R 1200 GS (1st place) there are no equal placements (see table and picture gallery).
