This is what the ranking of the most popular top 50 motorcycles in Germany looks like if we factor out all new commercial registrations. A mere five models can then hold their position.

“Model XY is only so high up because there are so many dealer approvals!” – “Yes, exactly, model YZ would be a lot further ahead if you could only see the approvals on private individuals!” bring, we have considered the registrations for “legal” and “natural” persons of the new motorcycle registrations in 2017 separately and can say to you: Yes, this actually applies to some models, less to others.

When looking at private new registrations in isolation, nothing changes in the top 4: the BMW R 1200 GS leads the ranking with a clear lead, followed by the Yamaha MT-07, Kawasaki Z 650 and Honda Africa Twin. Places 5 and 6 swap the ranking: the Kawasaki Z 900 pushes the KTM 690 Duke behind it. There is also a tussle in the remaining places in the top 50. Only the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT stoically holds its 30th place.

Definition of natural and legal persons

To be on the safe side, we will clarify the terminology here once again: According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), “natural persons” include all vehicle owners who register a vehicle on their person, i.e. registrations for private individuals. In turn, all commercial approvals, such as dealer approvals, company motorcycles, driving school and rental motorcycles, registrations for associations, police vehicles or the like, run under the designation “legal entities”. Most motorcycles in Germany are newly registered by private individuals: of a total of 100,128 newly registered bikes in 2017, 78.4 percent were owned by private individuals.

Motorcycles that stand out in particular

The motorcycle with the highest share of private new registrations is the Kawasaki Ninja 650 with 98.7 percent. In the adjusted statistics of private new registrations, it ranks 33rd, in the overall ranking it ranks 44th.

With 65.5 percent, the BMW S 1000 RR is the motorcycle with the largest number of new commercial registrations: that makes up 551 of a total of 841 new registrations. That costs the Bavarian athlete a total of 15 places in the adjusted statistics, which makes her bottom of the top 50.

But that doesn’t make her the biggest loser: her sister brand, the BMW F 800 R, loses 19 places from the overall ranking of the adjusted statistics: it ranks 24th in the total registrations, and it remains 43rd as soon as the 48 percent of commercial registrations have been eliminated.

The situation is similar for the BMW S 1000 XR: In the overall statistics it is in 16th place, but if we subtract the new commercial registrations, it falls back to 32nd place. With her, the proportion of new registrations to private individuals is 55.8 percent.

One of the winners is the Husqvarna 701 Supermoto: It ranks 10 places up in the statistics of private registrations: from 28th to 18th place. Of its total of 970 new registrations, it only needs 5.9 percent for the adjusted statistics 57 copies.
