As reported by the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM), the two-wheeler market is well below the one million mark that was exceeded in 2016. However, the 2016 result was boosted by sales of Euro 3 motorcycles and models without ABS.

Italy was once again Europe’s number 1 for new registrations of motorized two-wheelers over 50 cubic meters in 2017.

The number 1 motorcycle nation in Europe is once again Italy, where 204,579 motorized two-wheelers over 50 cubic meters (+ 5.4%) were newly registered in 2017. In second place is the French market, where the manufacturers were able to sell 162,808 units. For the German market, ACEM has 140,667 new registrations of motorized two-wheelers over 50 cubic meters (- 19.0%), Spain had 136,180 new registrations (- 12.5%). Great Britain follows already far behind with 97,713 new registrations (- 19.0%). These five volume markets alone cover 80% of all new registrations in Europe.

The market for small two-wheelers up to 50 cm³ grew noticeably. With 399,426 new registrations in this class, the increase was a whopping 26.0%. The top market here is France with 107,322 units (+ 16.0%), ahead of the Netherlands (86,826 vehicles / + 23.0%) and Germany (33,254 units / + 10.0%). Poland (29,633 / + 18.0%), Italy (26,031 / + 5.5%) and Spain (21,713) follow in the other ranks.

Electric motorcycles have a hard time getting going.

The market for electric motorcycles is still in a deep slumber. According to the association, the number of electric motorcycles sold rose by around a fifth to a total of 4,121 units last year. They achieved a market share of 0.45 percent. In France, 1,270 bikers relied on the juice from the socket, in Spain 1,166 and in Germany 477. Italy still reports 292 e-bikes, the Netherlands 229 and Austria 228.

Electromobility is developing much more dynamically in the small motorcycle segment. In 2017, ACEM recorded an increase from 11,342 to 27,029 units (no figures for the German market are available here). France (7,597 units) and the Netherlands (7,231 units) are at the forefront. This is followed by Belgium (5,487 units), Spain (2,644 units), Italy (1,175 units) and Austria (1,089 units).
