In winter they would certainly be happy to have one of the twelve test candidates presented here at hand, even though the temperatures down under rarely drop below ten degrees. Compared to winters in Central Europe, this is of course Pillepalle, and only clear words help at this point: None of the gloves tested and advertised as suitable for winter are seriously suitable for harsh winter conditions with ice, snow and freezing temperatures. And on longer motorway journeys at more than 130 km / h, these “winter gloves” do not warm enough in the long term, even at moderate temperatures of just under ten degrees. But: If you extend the term “winter” to “cold season”, no false expectations arise. After all, things can get uncomfortable on the motorcycle in autumn and spring.

Thickly lined gloves are a must, because driving with hypothermic hands that are restricted in movement increases the risk of accidents considerably. It is also stupid if the gloves are not reliably waterproof – when driving in the rain, wet fins can cool down within a few minutes, which in turn would threaten hypothermia. Fortunately, the competitors equipped with climate membranes showed hardly any nakedness in the wetness test, only that IXS and the Rev’it left some feathers in the water bath or when filling.
Back to the point of safety: If there is actually a fall, the thermal output is not really important. However, the majority of candidates offer decent protection. Great praise! Basically, warm, fluffy padded gloves are not particularly tight compared to normal touring gloves or sporty all-rounders – the anti-slip protection is often inadequate. Except for the Thermoboy and Hein Gericke, who fluff their hands too loosely despite the wrist latch being closed, the manufacturers have apparently done their homework: The parts sit comfortably and still firmly. hero and Vanucci Thanks to a special production technology (X-Trafit or Mcfit), in which the climate membrane is firmly connected to the upper material, an additional significantly better grip feeling, which can almost be classified as sporty. Like that.
Also the Buse, the Rev’it and the Scott want to make themselves popular as “new schoolers” among winter gloves with a sporty, direct grip feeling. However, they are more recommended for Australian winters. With the thickly lined Reusch, which is made entirely according to the old school, you can confidently go on shorter tours in the “high winter” even in this country. Take it easy – because simultaneous motorcycle trips in the Australian summer are more expensive and time-consuming.

The price differences are enormous, one Rev’it costs as much as three Thermoboy. Is a comparison even allowed? Yes, because it’s okay to save if you only get on a motorcycle a few times during the cold season. Then even the loser in the test is okay, after all, he also warms up quite a bit. For year-round drivers, however, it is worth spending 100 euros and more, because there are similarly large differences in safety as in prices, although more expensive does not mean safer. It hurts in the wallet at first – but still better than aching fingers.
This is how MOTORRAD tests: Testing and cold start
Sounds like a luxury problem: too nice, warm weather. But driving tests at summer temperatures in October are hardly useful. A laboratory test to put the warmth of winter gloves to the test, even earlier. The candidates were provided with a waterproof rubber inlet into which water heated to 60 ° C was filled. The inlet radiates heat, which is mainly insulated by the insulating synthetic fiber material in the glove lining.
A series of measurements was carried out at fixed time intervals. The more the curve determined from the individual values drops, the lower the heat output (apart from winter gloves, normal touring gloves were also measured for comparison). Another important aspect of weather and cold protection (max. 40 points): the wetness test. Two test samples per model were immersed in the immersion bath, and two more samples were filled with water to reveal any leaks. The level of safety (max. 25 points) offered by the glove was revealed by a meticulous examination of all relevant zones at risk in the event of a fall. What materials (tear and abrasion-resistant fabric, leather quality, doublings, reinforcements, padding, protectors) were used, how much support and torsional stiffness does the candidate offer, how tightly does the wrist latch lock? In terms of processing / equipment (max. 10 points), the testers also checked the material quality and appreciated useful gimmicks such as visor wipers or reflectors. Last but not least, a cold start was fortunately still possible: At just over 10 ° C on a rainy mountain stretch, the test drivers did their laps with a lot of braking and coupling processes in order to intensively test the comfort and fit (max. 25 points).

It is the small details that you often only notice after buying. For example, a well-functioning visor wiper, which naturally only proves its effectiveness the first time you drive in the rain. Or whether the cuffs can be stowed under the jacket sleeves of the station wagon in order to obtain optimal rain protection. In the driving tests, for example, plugging it in was a mess because of bulky, sometimes very long-cut cuffs with only inadequate adjustment options, for example with Thermoboy or Vanucci. Exemplary fitting, however, for example with Rev’it. Unfortunately, “just slip in” is not enough. Tip: ask in the shop whether a test drive is possible.
Reusch: well-contoured rubber wiper lip with high practical value in the rain.
Rev’it: Velcro and zip adjustment to flexibly fix the cuff.
