The Street Glide as a used motorcycle

It offers less chrome, less suspension travel and less wind protection than its touring sisters. And yet – or precisely because of it – she is the most chefficient of all Harleys.

Harley-Davidson Street Glide.

The really bad guys among the supposedly bad guys don’t drive choppers. The Presi device par excellence has been the Street Glide for some time. Preferably in black. Matt black! Anyone who actually drives to the meeting on their own two wheels as MC chairman appreciates the convenience of a “dresser”: suitcase, paneling, comfortable driver’s seat, running boards, rocker switch, large tank and on-board sound via audio system – the middle of 2005 as FLHXI introduced in the 2006 model (which has been called FLHX since 2007) offers everything that mileage eaters like. But that without the slightly bourgeois stable odor of the other Harley tourers, because the “fresh custom style with a light, minimalist approach” (quote from the first press release) ensures that the somewhat overweight, 35-year-old married , like to travel with spouses and have been in the Harley Owners Group for a long time, not for them Street Glide decides.

But it is not only the cowl bearers who work in MC management positions who grab the flat iron, which, thanks to the shortened spring travel at the rear, looks a bit like a German Shepherd dog ready to jump. The typical Street Glide customer is around ten years younger than the rest of the Tourer customer base (i.e. in their mid to late 40s), has many years of Harley experience on Dyna and / or Softail and prefers to ride solo than with mom on the back. As a used buyer, it doesn’t really matter which of the three twin-cam engines (see below) is serving in the object of his desire – they all work splendidly. Tech-savvy buyers in particular may pay attention to the noticeably improved chassis (from model year 2009) or toying with the highly recommended ABS (from 2008/2009). Anyone who is looking for a particularly clean look ex works will buy the right thing from the 2010 model. But the Street Glide year of construction doesn’t really matter when buying a used vehicle – they’re all super cool!

Only in the 2006 model year: 1449 cc, 71 hp at 5450 rpm, max. 109 Nm at 3400 rpm, five-speed gearbox – that brings the 345 kg curb weight to a maximum of 170 km / h.

sightseeing
The closely related Road King is still at the top of the MOTORRAD endurance test list. Which eliminates the need for questions about reliability. In the worst case, the Harley workshops can get their hands on striking audio systems. And only very rarely. Nevertheless, a tour should not be completely blind, because FLHX owners convert more often than tourer relatives. There are hardly any standard exhaust systems in practice, the favorites come from Kess-Tech, Jekill & Hyde or Remus. High handlebars (“apehangers”) in 35 or 45 format are also popular, and 21-inch front wheels are also among the conversion favorites. Also popular: performance enhancements. With the Super Tuner from Harley or the Power Commander there is hardly any trouble, the rest is under “well” for connoisseurs. In any case, important: pay attention to entries and papers! Better than the original Dunlop rubbers: Metzeler or Pirelli.

Market situation
If you are looking for a street glide in the relevant Internet sales exchanges, you may rub your eyes a little puzzled: There are models from the late 1990s and early 2000s. How’s that? Simple explanation: clone alert! Some hobbyists take advantage of the popularity of the real Street Glide and trim normal E-Glides or other related tourer models to FLHX. Note: The “original” was only sold from autumn 2005 (model year 2006), called the 2006 model FLHXI and since model year 2007 FLHX. With a lot of luck, early originals with a relatively high mileage (which does not have to be an obstacle to purchase) are available from around 13,000 euros, the majority of the “cheap” Street Glides are around 15,000 euros. If you want the currently still current TC 103 engine, you have to invest at least 20,000 euros. The rare CVO models are traded from around 26,000 euros. Typical modifications (exhaust, handlebars, front wheel, possibly increased performance) are gladly accepted and rewarded if necessary.
