From 1995 to 2002 one could sell almost 20,000 copies of the Kawasaki ZX-6R with 600 cubic displacement. A few hundred of the bikes still populate the well-known Internet second-hand markets and classifieds markets, but some of them have already achieved impressive youngtimer maturity.
Injection engine makes you fit for the future
A decisive step follows in 2003: the Kawasaki ZX-6R is made fit for the future with an injection engine. But that is only one aspect. With a little tweak in terms of displacement, the super-sporty ninja clearly gains in everyday practicality. However, at 636 cm³ you are above the permitted level of the super sport class, which is why an RR version with a rule-compliant 599 cm³ was offered in parallel.
Used buyers who turn more on country roads than on racetracks should, however, always target the 636 version of the Kawasaki ZX-6R. There is no lack of radical tailoring: radial brakes and upside-down forks underline their super-sporty ambitions, as do the fully adjustable chassis and the Kawasaki-typical Ram-Air throat in the fairing mask. Typical for this type of machine: the frequent model maintenance measures that bring you close to the optimum of what is dynamically feasible.

2003
New course: With an increase in displacement to 636 cm³, the little ninja no longer complies with the rules of the super sports class, but it convinces in everyday life with more abundance in the mid-rev range. Also on offer until 2006: the Kawasaki ZX-6RR with 599 cm³. The Kawasaki ZX636-B1H replaces the carburettor models with a larger engine (636 cm³), electronic injection, upside-down fork and radial brake calipers. Also new: valve control, pistons and gearbox. Colors: green, black and blue. Price: 9640 euros.
2005
Type Kawasaki ZX636-C1H with underseat silencer and more voluminous swingarm, fairing and windshield newly styled. Cylinder head modified, piston and engine management new. Weight increases from 188 to 192 kg, engine output from 118 to 130 hp. Colors: green, blue and silver. Price: 10,295 euros.

New situation: four years later, the displacement sinks back to the 599 cm³, which is standard in its class. This means that it loses a bit of pressure in the mid-rev range, but in addition to the peak value of 131 Ram-Air-PS, this vintage impresses with its even power output. The exhaust has been crouching under the rear since 2005.
With the Kawasaki ZX600P7F, the displacement drops to 599 cm³. The upside-down fork and the fairing, which is designed for better aerodynamics, are still new. Newly placed shock absorber, power drops to 125 hp, weight increases to 200 kg. Colors: green, black and orange. Price: 10,665 euros.

Type Kawasaki ZX600R9F with again reduced weight (193 kg) and increased performance (128 hp). Revision measures: rear silencer placed on the side, light rear frame, engine hung more steeply, finer appealing big piston fork fork. Colors: green, black, blue. Price: 10,895 euros.

Of course, the 600 super athletes are pure barrel organs, but the Kawasaki ZX-6R is hardly impressed by that. In any case, no authorized workshop can report an accumulation of typical problem cases with types from 2003. For this rather certify the ninja real reliability. Sometimes it can happen that vehicles with a high mileage (over 30,000 km) jumps out second or third gear – which indicates wear on the gears and shift fork.
You should rule out this deficiency by taking a correspondingly intensive test drive with the Kawasaki ZX-6R. Above all, all wear parts should be thoroughly checked during the inspection. The thickness of the brake discs is often overlooked. If the permissible dimension (is stamped) is not reached, an expensive replacement is due. Ideally, you should use the chassis number to ask the authorized dealer whether service work (recalls, retrofitting) is still open for the vehicle.
Market situation
Madness: What was more or less state-of-the-art in the pit lanes of this world a decade ago is now available for a strolling 3000 euros. Anyone who goes on a shopping spree under the aspect of “a lot of motorcycle technology for little money” should put the Kawasaki ZX-6R at the top of the wanted list.
The offer is more than extensive. But which is also good. Because in this way, heavily used goods can be separated from well-cared for and exemplary material. The second-hand stock exchanges offer both: rocked-down racing goats, which are nicely covered with foil and want to hide a lot of smoke traces, and 1A original homes, where the (mostly green) paintwork still shines like on the first day. A good investment: the Kawasaki ZX-6R model year from 2009 with the big piston fork from 5000 euros.
