In the Yamaha XV 1900 A Midnight Star, one thing is clear above all: Large cruisers have to work especially in the USA. The Big Twin was designed accordingly in Japan: its outer shape follows the streamlined design of the US cars from the 1940s down to the smallest detail. The air-cooled bumper motor with its eternally long stroke paths is also very traditional.

So much juice demands a transmission with sluggish qualities – this is evidenced by the gear changes, which are always acknowledged with an acceptable crack. But what would this performance be without a corresponding chassis? Here, too, the Yamaha likes: The aluminum frame saves weight, the fork and shock absorber are precisely and safely matched. Free rider? Convenience has its price. The Yamaha is very dynamic on the chassis side, but the lean angle is severely limited.

In principle, Yamaha’s flagship cruiser is considered robust. The high-quality workmanship vouches for long-lasting ownership and justifies the overall high price level of the Yamaha XV 1900 A Midnight Star. In workshops, the 1900s is usually waved through without any problems during the usual inspection work. However, when making an on-site appointment, make sure you have a fully stamped checkbook. Oil changes should also be carried out regularly (at least annually) for offers with particularly low mileage.

Because just like the small sister model XV 1600 A Wild Star, the hydraulic valve lifters can in individual cases react susceptibly to too old oil or inadequate ventilation and possibly result in high follow-up costs. The Yamaha XV 1900 A Midnight Star is usually left in its original condition by its (first-hand) owners, so that there are hardly any problems with non-approved attachments. Larger custom work should definitely be professionally documented.

With around 1000 sales since the model launch in 2006, the Yamaha XV 1900 A Midnight Star is only very weakly represented in the German motorcycle landscape. However, as a used car, it often comes into the limelight, often firsthand, very well maintained and with noticeably few kilometers. If the maintenance intervals have been adhered to, nothing speaks against a bargain at half the new price. The supply density of less than 10,000 euros is manageable, however, and the real pearls (not tinkered with, low mileage, first owner) then quickly change hands.

Selling over 10,000 euros is much more difficult, which is why anyone interested in the still quite young used Yamaha XV 1900 A Midnight Star (maximum three to four years) can conduct tough price negotiations. Specialists such as Wilhelm Hohls from Bergen (www.motorradhohls.de) also offer young imported machines (Roadliner, Stratoliner) from the USA, which are popular with XV fans because of their higher quality equipment (including chrome plating, factory accessories).
