For its 90th anniversary, Bayerische Motoren Werke is not only giving itself the classically cool R nineT. In the BMW Museum, the people of Munich also celebrated the good times and the sometimes not-so-good times with numerous jubilarians.

The secret hero of the event wore gray. Karl Gerlinger, ex-head of sales, retired for almost 20 years, has seen a lot. And still put his heart and soul into it. “Then a couple of colleagues pulled an all-terrain BMW out of the basement, and then I knew: we will build it!” Something like that happened, the rescue of BMW motorcycle Late 1970s.

Once again you were in a crisis. Not because everyone wanted to drive as they did in the early 1960s. Nor was it a world war with its dramatic consequences. It was more of a trade war. Tomorrow: BMW Motorrad boss Stephan Schaller presents part of the BMW future, the C-Evolution electric scooter

With the R 80 G / S, this was as surprising as it was convincing. The Bavarian motorcycle story continued and became a success story. That could not be foreseen in 1923, when it all began with the R 32. Of course, one of the 50 remaining R 32s could not be missing for the anniversary and was presented by museum director Dr. Ralf Rodepeter piloted into the hall. This model already showed the main features of today’s surcharge policy. Special equipment: electric horn and lighting. With a wonderful smell of all sorts of hydrocarbons, the old lady spread the flair of the 1920s. The current BMW Motorrad boss Stephan Schaller made a tough cut. He floated in electrically with the C-Evolution electric scooter coming onto the market next year. But Schaller was not only happy about the current good situation – we are aiming for another record year – but also about the near future. It would continue at this rate, he assured me. Plenty of innovations included.

Then the premiere: Head of Design Edgar Heinrich thuds with the R nineT on the stage. Compact, well processed and again with a telescopic fork instead of a telescopic lever. “That was really expensive,” remarked a BMW manager, because a new frame had to be used for that. It was definitely worth it, because this boxer hits the nerve. Not only does it look really beefy, it also offers a relaxed seating position. That makes you look forward to your first trip. Just as it is a pleasure to look back with the BMW celebrities on the past 90 years, which undoubtedly have not always been good. But those times are over: BMW is bursting with self-confidence for its anniversary. Rightly.
