BMW F 650 GS

Seven years of market presence ?? and what a. The BMW F 650 GS and its sisters CS and Dakar found over 33,000 buyers. Second-hand, the F is also a bestseller.

Pretty smart back then, around the turn of the millennium, when BMW launched a machine in the chronically undervalued middle class for the 2000 season that broke new ground in terms of design and technology.

A water-cooled single-cylinder engine with injection and regulated catalytic converter formed the heart of the F 650 GS, which was supposed to replace the somewhat stale looking F 650. Sleek appearance based on the big GS, harmonious, fun-oriented driving behavior, well thought-out, functional details ?? yes, the little GS can definitely be described as a big hit. For BMW, the versatile Enduro, available with ABS on request, turned out to be a sustainable gain. Driving schools valued them just like many newcomers because of the optionally low seat height of just 750 millimeters and the low weight of around 200 kilograms. It is not possible to precisely quantify how many new drivers will later remain loyal customers? However, it was certainly not a mistake in the grandiose sales success of the F 650 GS (well over 20,000 units) to put a technically complex motorcycle on the wheels in this segment. In any case, the competition had little to counter this for a while.

Except for color variations and minor technical changes, little has changed in the history of the F 650 GS model, and since 2005 the golden sales days of the stable single-cylinder enduro are over. Despite the new, exciting two-cylinder F models, you and your sisters are unlikely to be forgotten anytime soon. The used market shows that BMW is honoring the middle class as an exciting segment.

Unusual place for an inspection sticker, but the check book should be without gaps.

The F 650 GS survived the 50,000 kilometers in the demanding MOTORRAD long-distance test largely without damage. Almost all components of the pleasantly stable engine manufactured by Rotax were within the wear tolerance ?? by no means a matter of course for single cylinders.

Annoyances such as inadequately fastened plastic covers, loose mirror arms, a leaky water cooler or a clutch that was worn out prematurely were still there. The submission of a complete inspection booklet and a meticulous assessment of the used vehicles offered is therefore absolutely recommended, especially for mileages over 30,000 kilometers. Good: heated grips, luggage systems, more effective accessory front wheel fenders. Particularly good: the optionally available and highly recommended ABS and a harder spring for the rear damper for heavier drivers.

Market situation

Clear, modern, stylish: the plastic charm does not suit everyone’s taste.

The range is so large that interested parties can quickly lose track of things. The easiest way is probably to go to BMW dealers, although there are often quite steep prices for some F 650 GS from second or third hand. With a bit of luck, you will also find fair and fine offers from non-brand dealers, because motorcycle beginners like to trade in the popular BMW when switching to a larger machine.

In the case of used general goods retailers, however, the chance of a good offer is rather low, as the comparatively expensive mid-range motorcycle is out of the (price) range for single-cylinder machines. Partly unrealistic price expectations are the reason why the F 650 GS, which is actually very popular, is not literally torn out of their hands, even with private sellers. Interested parties should nevertheless dare to do extensive research into private advertisements and thoroughly check promising offers, although in general there are hardly any real bargains to be expected.

The right way in the middle class

ABS on a mid-range motorcycle: BMW was progressive.

Technical progress is common in the super sports and tourist upper class. Because good technology can also be sold well and at a high price. In the middle class, largely dictated by the red pen, good features such as a brake assistant or an exhaust gas cleaning system were rather the exception until not so long ago.

At the turn of the millennium, BMW acted absolutely right, used the gap wisely and, even without heated discussions about climate change or safety, gave its cheapest, albeit not exactly cheap, model, the single-cylinder GS, an ABS (left in the picture) and a regulated catalytic converter. That was and is the most convincing argument for many buyers of mid-range bikes.

From 2004 fresh colors came into the program.

2000: The water-cooled single-cylinder engine F 650 GS with injection, G-Kat and ABS (optional) is available for the first time in the BMW range for 6621 euros

2001: Adaptation of the engine electronics to regular gasoline (at least 91 octane)

2004: engine with double ignition. Modified front fenders and windshield, larger headlights, new luggage rack, changed ergonomics of the clutch lever. New colors: yellow, black, metallic silver. Price: 7250 euros

2007: Last year of construction, on offer for 7540 euros. In November, BMW presented the two-cylinder successor models F 650 GS and F 800 GS for 2008 at the Eicma motorcycle trade fair in Milan / Italy

The Dakar version

Well-informed fan circles are specifically looking for the Dakar version.

The Dakar version (also type R 13), which has been sold around 4,300 times since 2001, is usually a little more expensive than the standard GS second-hand. A well-informed group of fans is specifically looking for her. They are mostly taller motorcyclists from 1.80 meters, including beginners, for whom a seat height of 890 millimeters is no hurdle. On the contrary: you are looking for a lofty height so you don’t have to fold yourself up tightly. And they don’t want to tame a huge bunch of motorcycles, such as a weighty two-cylinder enduro. The light and handy BMW with a sufficiently strong, low-vibration single-cylinder engine is then the right choice and also a wallet-friendly alternative.

Globetrotters will find an excellent travel partner in the Dakar, with whom all routes from the motorway to the desert runway are open to you. Marathon stages are also no problem for the very frugal and balanced enduro: with a range of around 500 kilometers, despite the sofa-like seating comfort, the rider’s stamina is more likely to dictate the pace of the break.

The CS version

The less popular CS model is just the thing for bargain hunters.

That this duckling will one day mutate into a beautiful, proud swan that will become a cult à la Suzuki Katana or BMW R 1100 GS is probably wishful thinking. The fact that the CS with the pithy surname »Scarver« quickly grows dear to a buyer who is less concerned with aesthetics can hardly be denied.

Because clever motorcycle rationalists know: The F 650 CS, which was built from 2002 to the end of 2005, is a very sophisticated single-cylinder machine with excellent performance. It may not be as casual as the marketing people would have you believe, but it is reliable. And thanks to the low seat height (750 millimeters) it drives and maneuvers with ease. Above all, insecure beginners as well as shorter men and women perceive this as a convincing purchase argument. But even advanced and brisk drivers will find a suitable base for every outrage in the CS, which has been sold around 7500 times. The CS, which is unpopular due to its idiosyncratic design, is attractively priced in comparison to similarly used GS used vehicles, namely a few hundreds cheaper.
