Giving an answer to a question nobody asked is not a very clever idea. Especially not if the answer is a really elaborately made motorcycle that disappears into oblivion after only four years. This expensive luxury allowed itself Harley-Davidson with the Harley-Davidson Softail Rocker, which can only be found in the program from 2008 to 2011, as a basic model even only in 2008 and 2009. The start was quite promising: In the first and by far the most successful model year, most buyers opted for the rockers without even having seen them in the original. Fat 240 mm rear wheel rubber, a long fork, advanced notches – and all of this ex works. A glance at the Internet or in the brochure was enough to break the must-have instinct and buy it blindly.

In real life it turned out very often that although the whole load was surprisingly easy to drive, the Twin Cam 96B engine was also a lot of fun, but the whole thing was not so good. What was usually exactly because of the fact that Harley-Davidson was so incredibly proud: on the resilient metal fender, attached directly to the swing arm and with the bike in diligent up-and-down movement while driving. Especially in connection with the – well – “bizarre” fold-out pillion seat, the whole thing looked really strange. The clientele made a short conversion process and diligently upgraded to new, conventional stern. Irony of history: The legitimate successor to the Harley-Davidson Softail Rocker, the Breakout, offers today exactly what was rebuilt back then. And thus became an absolute bestseller in the Harley range.

Forget the standard technology when viewing your desired used vehicle – it simply works flawlessly, there are no model-specific abnormalities. Apart from the above-average rear tire wear. The fat rocker roller usually only reaches half the mileage that Harley owners are otherwise used to. In extreme cases, just 3000 kilometers. As a replacement, a 260 is also clamped onto the original rim – please ensure approval / registration.

Back to the tour: The Harley-Davidson Rocker / C was THE Harley conversion base of its time, and extensive rear-end conversions from Rick’s, Thunderbike or Heartland are more the rule than the exception. Some of these conversions can (theoretically) be reversed – keyword original condition – and it is extremely helpful if the previous owner still has the original parts in stock. Other main focus areas: seat, handlebars, tank and of course the exhaust.

Market situation

Are you looking for something totally exotic? Here you go: a basic Harley-Davidson Rocker in its original condition is pretty much the most unusual thing you can treat yourself to as a used Softail. Which means in concrete terms: As good as no longer available; because the puristic basic model was originally purchased almost without exception as a conversion base. The chances of finding a Harley-Davidson Rocker C left in its original condition are better, but they are not great either. To make matters worse, the fact that two otherwise comparable models are now in their absolute original condition is now better rewarded than a conversion that cost 6,000 euros or more a few years ago.

Between 16,000 and 19,000 euros for a reasonably original Harley-Davidson Rocker are realistic, the mileage is of secondary importance. There are also some offers to be found in the over 20,000 euro league, but these are usually quite heavy modifications. And with the called up tariffs often also about moon prices, which can hardly be achieved in practice. It is understandable that some of the first-time owners try to refinance their investments at least partially, but there is usually a wide gap between what is desired and what is actually happening. Market experts suspect that rocker prices will remain constant for two to three years – and then rise.
