Usually the winning motorcycles in the toughest rally in the world, the Paris Dakar, are hand-carved prototypes brimming with bespoke components. In the KTM Adventure 950, which in 2002 under Fabrizio Meoni was allowed to attach the blue ribbon for the fastest desert ride to the house-high fairing, was different. The Austrians have always had a preference for the stony path, and so the material-devouring desert hunt was chosen as the ideal long-term testing terrain for the completely newly developed two-cylinder enduro. According to KTM, the winning machine at the time corresponded to 95 percent of the later series material, which should say everything about the off-road qualities.
The Superenduro can also impress on the road with its uncompromising appearance and acceleration. In the MOTORRAD endurance test over 50,000 kilometers, in addition to minor ailments, there were real weaknesses such as defective fuel pumps and leaky cylinder head gaskets, and at the end of the test, the exhaust valves of the rear cylinder were burned. But KTM reacted quickly and remedied the affected machines as part of the due inspections. There were no related recalls or retrofitting actions, which is why only a completely stamped service booklet guarantees the current state of the art.
Although both the seat height and the price move in upscale regions, KTM was able to bring a good 2100 copies of the carburettor-equipped 950s to the Hardendurist. The injection 990, which has been offered since 2006, does not yet play a role on the used market, and the S model of the 950 is also rare. The following applies to every adventure: If it is too high, you are not yet ready for it.
Market situation
With a stock of around 2100 Adventure 950 and a good 700 Adventure 990, the range of used vehicles is not exactly abundant. A rarity is the higher set S. There is nothing useful for less than 6500 euros, the upgrade to the S-Class costs around 1000 euros more. Otherwise, the prices are based on mileage and terrain, i.e. the condition of the vehicle. Due to the still young age, most of the offers are available from dealers. Advantage: The machines have a guarantee.
sightseeing
As already mentioned, KTM carried out model maintenance measures on individual examples; of course, only if the owner regularly brought his machine for service. If the travel enduro is used appropriately, traces of use are inevitable. In general, when looking for bent rear frames, loose spokes, dented radiators and leaky or worn dampers, increased attention is paid to enduros. If (too loud) accessory pots decorate the KTM, you should ask for the original bags. Other accessories are gladly accepted, but hardly have an impact on the price.
Facelift
2003 market launch of the 950 Adventure (type 900), price: 12,290 euros; S model: 12,490 euros. Right from the time of market launch, KTM carried out model maintenance measures tailored to the affected motorcycles. Therefore, pay attention to a complete service booklet.
2004 Wider rear rim (4.25 instead of 4.00 inches), improved coating of the aluminum swing arm, main stand, carburetor heating as standard, prices unchanged.
2005 Seat height reduced by 20 millimeters due to shorter spring travel, gel seat bench for Standard Adventure, improved mass balancing and noise insulation measures in the engine, torque limitation to protect the electric starter, rear brake and heat protection on the muffler modified, prices unchanged.
2006 model launch (type 901) 990 Adventure and Adventure S, price 12,749 euros each. 990 cm3 engine from the Super Duke, throttled to 98 hp, with petrol injection, Euro 3, standard ABS (not S), revised steering head for greater steering angle, modified design.
2007 S model: spring travel increased by 20 millimeters again, on-board socket, price 12,998 euros each.
