Second-hand advice: KTM 990 Super Duke

KTM 990 Super Duke / R

The KTM is also available as an R version.

Boredom is certainly not one of the qualities that one has with the KTM 990 Super Duke connects. On the contrary. Even the first encounters in the year of publication 2005 were exciting – in two respects. On the one hand, she impressed with unbelievable dynamism, thanks to which the Austrian was refreshing to go hunting and is still going. On the other hand, she surprised with technical inadequacies in several tests and even had to go home to the editorial office once in a van. Because of a defective cable, the battery did not receive any charging current and the battery was drained. The end came after about 50 kilometers. Not an isolated case, as insiders report and as it emerges from relevant forums.

A defective starter clutch also caused problems in the first two model years. On some bikes, the starting procedure was mixed with a brutal, metallic beating. Eliminated as part of model maintenance measures KTM these defects, copies from mid-2006 should no longer be affected. If so, according to a dealer, the manufacturer is still very accommodating in the event of complaints.

Occasionally, cooling water mixes with engine oil. “In the first two years of construction you should install a modified shaft seal with a reinforced shaft for the water pump between 20,000 and 25,000 kilometers,” advises the Swabian KTM dealer Jurgen Mayer (www.ktm-mayer.de). A look into the radiator or expansion tank shows whether the cooling water has mixed with oil. If there is a telltale mud floating there, the following measures will help: oil change, flushing out the water circuit, installation of the parts mentioned. Occasionally there are other impurities lurking in the cooling water, which mostly come from the coating of the cooler. These also affect later models and can damage the water pump. Careful flushing of the cooling system also helps here.

On the other hand, there is no cure for the high consumption of the first two model years. The great Duke treats himself to ten liters and more with a sporty pace – quite steep! That only changed in 2007, when KTM extensively modified the Duke and equipped it for the Euro 3 standard. Among other things, the developers from Mattighofen revised the coordination of the ignition / injection system. According to the horsepower measurement, the 990 has drawn about a liter less juice through the injectors since then.

What has remained is the high level of reliability of the engine. You read that correctly: The Super Duke’s propellant is basically very reliable! Obviously, the Austrians also increased the stability of the V2 when they stole it from the 950 Adventure and upgraded it to a full liter displacement.

The LC8 engine still had one peripheral weakness: the clutch slave cylinder. Over time, the piston jams, hydraulic oil escapes, coupling impossible. A permanent remedy can be found in an accessory. The high-quality slave cylinder from Sigutech (98.95 euros plus shipping costs) does its job without any problems.

Some Super Duke drivers complain about the increased oil consumption of their base and talk of up to 0.6 liters per 1000 kilometers. “This happens every now and then with new engines. Normally that goes away after 6000 kilometers at the latest ”, knows KTM dealer Konrad Schittko from Unna (www.schittko.rent-a-byte.info). “Even if there is too much oil in the container, the engines indulge in more lubricant. In addition, deviating oil level displays sometimes falsify the actual consumption. ”Schittko advises always measuring the oil level under the same conditions: Warm up the machine for ten kilometers, then check the oil level with the engine running and the bike upright. Ideally, it should then be at the minimum.

Hands-free wheelie with the KTM 990 Super Duke.

After long periods of inactivity, the motors sometimes rattle after starting. The noise comes from the hydraulically tensioned timing chain. Initially without sufficient oil pressure, the chain runs loosely in its guide. The rattling is harmless and should have subsided after a few seconds.

Every now and then the engines go out when braking heavily. This happens when the tank is only half full or empty. Then the fuel pump in the fuel barrel draws air, slap, out. “To prevent this, simply turn the pump 180 degrees so that the suction opening with the sieve points downwards,” advises Michael Bongen from Pirate Racing (www.pirate-racing.de). “To do this, however, you have to extend the fuel hose.”

So what should a future Super Duke driver look out for when buying a used vehicle? Except for the points mentioned, make sure that all oil changes (every 7500 kilometers) and the major inspections (after 15000 kilometers) have been carried out. Depending on the effort, they especially eat a large hole in the wallet with around 400 euros. Watch out for fall marks and / or many previous owners within a short time. Used Super Dukes are rare and very stable in value. Even the first series can hardly be had for less than 6000 euros. Perhaps the prices will drop soon, because the new Super Dukes have recently been officially available for 10,995 euros and thus a smooth thousand less than in 2010. PS wishes you a happy tap!

Changes from 2007 / Super Duke R

Second-hand advice: KTM 990 Super Duke

Mitterbauer / KTM

KTM 990 Super Duke.

Changes in 2007: Tank volume increased by four to 18.5 liters, modified lamp mask, different cockpit, radially screwed brake calipers, modified engine control, smaller pinion in front, flatter steering head angle, shorter caster, tighter setup of the spring elements. Since then, the Super Duke has not seen any relevant technical changes.

History of the KTM Super Duke R
With the “R” in 2007, KTM brought a more stringent version of the Super Duke. On the engine side, the Mattighofen-based company initially did not change anything, technical modifications only affected the chassis: much more tightly tuned suspension elements, longer strut with shorter spring travel, steering damper. The one-man bench, the orange frame, the white paintwork with R lettering and some carbon fiber trim give the R a grandiose appearance. Price: 13 698 euros (basic version: 12 498 euros).

In 2008, KTM revised the engine: lighter crankshaft, connecting rod and valve train; larger intake ports and valves; 52 throttle body of the superbike RC8; specially coated pistons; Akrapovic manifold. Thanks to these changes, the R now made 12 hp more (nominal output: 132 hp), and it revs up to 1000 rpm. However, she still goes very hard on the gas. After massive criticism, KTM softened the chassis for 2010. Like the basic version, it also got a new cockpit. The Super Duke R 12 currently costs 995 euros.
