Spokes can loosen on wire-spoke wheels on various BMW models. In response to a request from MOTORRAD, BMW confirmed corresponding forum reports from BMW drivers.

BMW is currently “reworking the wheels for free,” said BMW spokesman Gerhard Lindner. From seven loose wire spokes, these would no longer just be tightened; instead, BMW would replace the affected front or rear wheel free of charge.

Only boxer models affected

But that only applies to the models R 1200 GS and GS Adventure, built between February 1 and June 3, 2018, as well as the R nineT Scrambler and Urban G / S, built between February 1 and June 23, 2018. 13,500 motorcycles worldwide are potentially affected, 2460 of them in Germany. The owner can only find out the exact production date from the dealer. Dealers are called upon to pay particular attention to wire-spoke wheels during service appointments.

Loose spokes can be recognized by their muffled sound, for example when you stroke them with a screwdriver. The cause is the change of a spoke assembly lubricant in the Berlin plant, which may have caused the spokes not to have received a sufficient tightening torque.
