Belts instead of inverted tooth chains: As of model year 2012, an aramid fiber belt takes care of the secondary drive. This saves weight and also (production) costs.

Cockpit 2012: polygonal shaped analog instruments. The deeper meaning of a tachometer on an automatic scooter is not immediately apparent.

Model upgrade 2012: more displacement, more power, sharper packaging and a lot of detailed work. A very good scooter became an even better one.

Cockpit 2008: bigger and chrome-framed. To the left of the analog speedometer is the coolant temperature display, to the far right is the fuel gauge. Clock and
Digital mileage display.

Facelift 2008: rear and exhaust snappy, sportier front, but the biggest thing was under the plastic – from now on with an aluminum frame instead of a steel frame.

The original cockpit: it all began with clearly laid out analogue instruments. And went on – thank God, Yamaha always refrained from the digital mouse cinema.

After that, nothing was the same: in 2000, Yamaha’s flagship scooter revolutionized the scooter scene. Constant model updates made sure that the big Yamaha TMax is still a good choice today. Mostly used.

The matter can be summed up very simply: Milestone. Almost everything that was previously sold as a “large scooter” was, at best, bobbing as a 250 cc in the no man’s land between the city runabout and the straight-for-the-country road before the summer of 2000. Chassis, brakes? Present, but also no longer. Drive train swing arm, simple struts and simple brakes made the scooter what scooter refusers didn’t want for good reason: a rocking compromise. Yamaha took up the topic at TMax completely different, namely as a motorcycle manufacturer.

And so there is a lot more motorcycle under the lush plastic shell than the scooter layman suspects. For example, a parallel twin firmly connected to the frame. A state-of-the-art dohc four-valve engine, in which a third cylinder including an opposed piston as a technical delicacy ensures that the vibrations are quiet and that the Yamaha TMax catapulted very quickly to almost 160 km / h. Variator? Sure, but the final drive is provided by two encapsulated, maintenance-free chains running in an oil bath via a conventional swing arm (a belt since 2012). In addition, there are firm spring elements and powerful, stable brakes. Everything was made to make life very difficult for mid-range motorcycles on curvy terrain. The biggest TMax problem: its original price? What does the used buyer care?!

A fundamental topic when viewing fully covered two-wheelers: hidden accident damage. What looks like a harmless fall over or a slight bump from the outside can be massive frame damage under the plastic. Therefore have the accident-free confirmed in writing.
A rattling / ticking that can be heard more or less clearly when idling, which becomes a little louder when accelerating (but deviously disappears after a while), can indicate a defective timing chain tensioner. A typical problem of the first series, there is an improved component (around 100 euros plus installation, if necessary see workshop invoices). If you do not react immediately to noises, you run the risk of major engine damage.
The petrol pump ensures starting problems when the engine is (very) hot (2007/2008 models). Let it cool down, replacing the rubber seal helps permanently. Keep an eye on: the front brake. Sportily moving Yamaha TMax “eat” brake pads.
Market situation
The Yamaha TMax sold through the German importer and his dealers are very manageable in terms of number of items, so the range of “official” TMax (and from 2005 onwards generally equipped with ABS) is correspondingly meager. The situation in southern Europe is completely different: in Italy alone, well over 100,000 (!) TMax were sold. So if you look in the relevant Internet used markets, you will come across a correspondingly large number of “Italians” whose approval in Germany thanks to COC (Certificate of Conformity, EC declaration of conformity) does not pose too much of a problem, but their equipment (ABS!) Is not always included is identical to the “German” Yamaha TMax.
In principle, used TMax are not vehicles that are torn from the hands of dealers or private sellers – on the contrary. This creates leeway in price negotiations, especially in the upper price segment. While there is still some movement in the market up to 6000 euros, the air for sellers above that is very thin; because the distance to demonstration / new vehicles is too small. Even if the new list price is now 11,195 euros, in practice almost no one pays more than 9995 euros.
