Engineering and More (E&M), manufacturer of Wakan motorcycles, has been in liquidation since May 9, 2011. Based in Aniane (34), E&M is a simplified joint-stock company with a capital of 1.4 million euros, founded in 1999 by Joël Domergue.

Wakan, the "haute couture" of motorcycles

Created in 1999 by Joël Domergue, Wakan is a small manufacturer of very high-end motorcycles based near Montpellier.

Aiming particularly at the American market, this craftsman developed the Hundred Roadster, a motorcycle with minimalist shapes and dimensions (1380 mm wheelbase, 183 kg dry) built around a 1640 cc S&S V-twin boosted by Wakan, then inserted with a shoehorn in a steel beam frame.

Developing 120 hp and 165 Nm of torque, the Hundred Roadster offers an impeccable finish and peripherals to match: 46mm Ceriani fork, front single-disc with AJP 6-piston caliper, etc. It is also distinguished by its double valve intake box mounted on its fake tank crossed out in white, like the Anglo-American car Shelby AC Cobra.

Reserved for rich enthusiasts, it is sold at a price of € 33,500: an extremely high amount which explains its distribution, to say the least, confidential..

She takes care of everything related to the production and sale of elitist French motorcycles, from filing patents to assembly through commercial development..

According to the accounts it published until 2009 in the Montpellier Trade and Companies Register (34), Engineering and More has been in the red for several years: from -129,000 € in 2004, the company’s losses are increased to – € 233,000 in 2009, showing a deficit of nearly one million euros in six years.

In the red for several years

Despite several attempts, Site was unable to reach Wakan officials: the head office telephone line seems no longer to be assigned and our requests for information by email went unanswered..

Although worrying, this situation does not necessarily mean that the Wakan brand is doomed: the manufacturer can in particular be bought out and its activity maintained (E&M employed four employees in 2009).

Radio silence

Joël Domergue is also well placed to know it since Scorpa, the brand of trial motorcycles that he launched with Marc Tessier in 1993, was placed in compulsory liquidation before being taken over by the French Sherco in 2009 (read ).

Wakan notably exhibited one of its exclusive models on the Motul stand at the Paris Motor Show in 2007, alongside the German motorcycle Neander Turbo-D (read). She also presented her motorcycles at the Paris Tuning Show in 2009 (read).

Let us hope that the radio silence in which Wakan seems to have walled himself for several months does not augur anything catastrophic and that after Voxan in 2010 (read in particular), the French motorcycle scene is not on the verge of losing the one of his so rare actors…
