If you want to keep your motorcycle textile suit and functional underwear longer, you should clean it regularly. We tested nine functional detergents for this. The products cost between 2.10 and 9.99 euros.

Functional detergents must thoroughly clean sweaty clothing and still be gentle on the material. With modern functional fibers, a conventional detergent quickly reaches its limits. The cleaning of breathable materials such as Gore-Tex and classic functional underwear is a real show of strength. This is because the chemicals used in production stick to the fibers for a long time and are only gradually released to the skin. In addition, not only normal dirt and bacteria, but also chain fat, oil and bacteria have to be removed.

That is why MOTORRAD tested nine functional detergents, all of which were purchased from specialist retailers, drug stores and discounters. The test field moves in a price range from 2.10 to 9.99 euros and was tested in the following categories:

1st part of the test: cleaning performance

Specially ordered, standardized test panels are used as test material. They are washed on a gentle cycle at 30 degrees Celsius. To ensure reproducibility, industrial washing machines from the laundromat are used.

Our candidates have to show their colors in the test category “cleaning staff”. Not only normal skin dirt and sebum have to be removed here. Insect blood, insect dirt and oil or chain fat are also on the program. Especially the own brands of the drugstore chains Rossmann and Muller are having a hard time. But there is also a real muscle man among the cheap homes. The functional detergent Bionicdry not only reliably removes all tested soiling, Werner’s own brand also convinces in the bacterial test & Mertz – known for the logo with the red frog prince. Only the product from Dr. Wack off even better. The functional detergent is the most expensive in the test, but proves in the categories of cleaning power, bacteria removal and handling that it is really worth the money.

2nd part of the test: bacteria removal

Because an unpleasant smell of sweat often remains in the clothes even after washing. At this point, let’s slide the knowledge block “Biology & History ”: Although the human perspirant is odorless, it offers the bacterium Corynebacterium jeikeium a breeding ground to multiply quickly. The typical smell of sweat only arises when the tiny inhabitants of the skin break down the fats, proteins and amino acids it contains. At a time when people communicated less via language and more via smell, they had an important task: They converted the testosterone contained in sweat into sexual attractants. The fatty acid molecules that are not used in the process ultimately produce what smells.

60 degrees required, 30 degrees possible

A strong cleaner is needed here, because these bacteria are only killed at a washing temperature of 60 degrees. However, according to the label, climate membranes such as Gore-Tex or functional underwear sets should only be washed at 30 degrees. In order to be able to examine the cleaning performance in this special test category in detail, we use a contact test. Functional underwear that has been in continuous use with our test drivers for ten days is used as the material. It is first checked for its bacterial content and then cleaned strictly according to the instructions.

After the wash, we measure again and are surprised by the result. Because none of the test participants manages to eliminate all microbes without leaving any residue. The drugstore products are particularly negative here. Due to the use of fragrances, the material smells clean and fresh, but unfortunately our germ test cannot confirm this. The bacterial population was only marginally minimized.

Organic functional detergents work

But there is also a surprise at this checkpoint. In addition to the products from S100 and Bionicdry, the organic products from Fibertec and Almawin are also convincing. Due to the use of biodegradable substances such as sugar surfactants and lactic acid, it may smell a bit pungent at first, but this scent disappears during the wash cycle.

Functional clothing in the freezer

If you want to get to grips with bacteria even more naturally, you can spend a night in the freezer with your laundry. The stubborn germs don’t like cold at all. The functional clothing should lie in a sealable plastic bag and spend at least twelve hours at temperatures below zero. This household tip works particularly well when you are still fresh in sweat. This makes the subsequent work easier for the detergent. Because even specialists like Tech Wash from Nikwax and the Activecare sports cleaner from washing professional Perwoll can use a little help in eliminating bacteria.

3rd part of the test: handling

There are not so great differences between the products in all test categories. In the handling chapter, the test field remains close together. A detailed description of the application can be found with all cleaning products. As well as instructions on how to determine the correct amount of detergent for different degrees of soiling. The labels are easy to understand and the ingredients that must be labeled are correctly stated everywhere. Each product has an integrated measuring cup in the lid, which facilitates precise dosing. With the S100 detergent, the practical washing ball is even placed completely in the drum. Overall, however, the MOTORRAD functional detergent test shows a clear picture. And there are several effective specialty products on the market that we can safely recommend.
