Just no duels with sporty compact cars! One loses. The Honda Shadow with 46 hp and a good five hundredweight is of the cozy kind, and the driver should be too. This machine doesn’t want to compete, it just wants to be fun. The motorcycle is great for everyday escapes. The 52-degree V2 is considered to be almost indestructible and has proven itself thousands of times in various Hondas – from touring machines to travel enduro and especially in the previous model, the VT 750 C Shadow. Since the machine (since 2004 and 2007) is only called Shadow or Shadow Spirit, a flawless cardan drive has underlined the no-stress principle.

From 2010 an ABS brake was added for the Honda Shadow, from then on there was nothing to complain about apart from the somewhat poor performance on this very balanced bike with carefree handling. The only headache for interested parties is the choice of model: With deep-drawn fenders on cruiser paths? Or something cooler for a cafe meeting with the chopper-like Shadow Spirit? The golden, uh, black middle, so the Black Spirit?

2004 The VT 750 C / C2 Shadow or Black Widow becomes the model with a new name Shadow 750 (Type RC50). The carburettor V2 engine with three valves per cylinder (46 hp) was taken over from its predecessors, otherwise redesign: lower frame, saddle, tank, handlebars, fenders, cardan (instead of chain). Colors: red and black. Weight: 254 kg. Price: 6990 euros.

What all models have in common: the engine, which has hardly changed in the course of the model’s history. So there are other things that are decisive for those interested in the VT 750. The Shadow 750 as a classic cruiser with a high windshield and leather panniers is often taken as used by older men around 60 – for leisurely, extended tours and shorter trips. The slimmer Shadow Spirit is more popular in the 40+ class – for example as a stand for the short excursion on Saturday afternoon.
Both second-hand models are in roughly the same demand, provided they are in good condition and price. All prices below 4,500 euros are considered good prices if the odometer does not yet show 20,000 kilometers. There are also buyers who are specifically looking for a maximum of two-year new-value bikes with a mileage of less than 5,000 kilometers, but they are rarely willing to pay more than 6,000 euros. The special Black Spirit model, which is only available for a short time, is rarely available. Good bargains can be found with the VT 750 S: around 4,500 euros with in some cases only 5,000 kilometers. Occasionally, very complex conversions appear in classifieds – sometimes more expensive than new vehicles. There are hardly any interested parties for such individualized machines – helpful for successful price negotiations.

The cardan drive, which was only introduced on the Shadow in 2004, has proven to be a better alternative to chain drives and rarely causes stress. Nevertheless: The oil in the final drive (163 ml capacity) should be changed at every second maintenance interval (Honda stipulates 6000 intervals). A major inspection is only due after 36,000 kilometers, during which the valve clearance is checked and oils, coolant, filters and spark plugs are replaced.
In a workshop there are 3.5 working hours plus parts costs, so easily times 350 euros. The V2, which is seldom heavily used, is considered to be extremely durable with regular maintenance. Technical problems are most likely to arise in the case of neglected private offers. Mostly to be recognized by sloppily cared for wheels and corroded metal parts. Beware of extremely cheap dealer offers without a maintenance history – even the biggest problem machines look delicious after professional reconditioning.
