Former Dakar Rally winner Hubert Auriol has died at the age of 68. The Ethiopian-born Frenchman died of cardiovascular collapse.

As reported by the French news agency AFP, Auriol died on Sunday the 10th. January after a cardiovascular collapse. He must have suffered from health problems for a long time. Auriol was born in Ethiopia in 1952 and was therefore nicknamed “the African”.

Auriol celebrated his greatest successes in 1981 and 1983 when he won the Dakar Rally on a motorcycle. In 1984 the BMW driver finished second behind Gaston Rahier. In 1992 he was also able to win the endurance rally in the car class in a Mitsubishi Pajero. Auriol was the first Dakar participant to win with a motorcycle and a car.

From 1995 to 2004 he was the rally leader of the Dakar for the Dakar umbrella organization ASO. For his services, Auriol was awarded the French National Order of Merit and made a member of the Legion of Honor.
