The International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) has started the second half of the season on the Schleizer Dreieck. 29,000 spectators celebrated their idols in bright sunshine.

On Germany’s oldest natural race track, top-class racing was offered in four grade classes and three cups. The IDM, carried out by Motor Presse Stuttgart as organizer and promoter, remains a series that you can touch. The fans love it.

IDM Superbike 1000

“They cheered and clapped, and I’m not the local hero,” said Ilya Mikhalchik (alpha Racing-Van Zon BMW) enthusiastically. The IDM Superbike defending champion is the rider who wants to wrest the current IDM leadership in the premier class from local hero Julian Puffe. On the unique racetrack in his home country, the Schleizer lost ten points ahead of his pursuer, who is also his team-mate. Now only nine counters separate the two.

Mikhalchik won the two races held in front of Puffe and danced his Ukrainian national dance again in front of the audience with the Hopak. Third places were shared by Jan Buhn (EGS Moto Racing) and Pepijn Bijsterbosch (Dutch Comfort Houses). In both cases this resulted in a complete BMW podium. The presumed superiority of BMW at the beginning of the season has not been confirmed. Five brands are represented in the IDM Superbike 1000: BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. With the exception of Honda, every manufacturer has had at least one driver on the podium, and Kawasaki even at the top. At Honda, however, the constancy of the Italian Alessandro Polita (Holzhauer Racing Promotion) pays off on the CBR 1000 RR. He is fifth in the overall standings.

The summer weekend was hot on and off the track. This method of cooling seems extremely efficient.

IDM Supersport 600

In the IDM Supersport 600, Max Enderlein from Hohenstein-Ernstthaler continues to dominate on a Yamaha. He is already 49 points ahead of his brand colleague Tom Toparis from Australia. A Kawasaki rider, Luca Grunwald, won the first run in Schleiz. The Bavarian is back at the top of an IDM class after a long injury break. As a title candidate, however, he is no longer an option because of his large points deficit due to an injury.

IDM Supersport 300

In the junior class IDM Supersport 300, Angelo Licciardi initially extended his lead in the championship on Kawasaki with his third win of the season. However, when he won the first race, the 21-year-old Belgian benefited from the bad luck of World Championship pilots Jan-Ole Jahnig (Nobitz) and Victor Steeman (NL) on a KTM. Pole setter Jahnig slipped the rear wheel at the exit of the chicane and Steeman could no longer avoid it. Licciardi won ahead of David Kuban (CZE) on KTM and IDM runner-up Rick Dunnik (NL) on Yamaha.

The second race of the IDM Supersport 300 was even more dramatic. The lead changed several times. Licciardi and Jahnig asserted themselves as the top trio until the last lap, but could not break away from the field. In the last round the fight came to a head in the group of six. In a dramatic decision in the last chicane before the start and finish, David Kuban secured the race win from guest starter Jeffrey Buis (NL) on Yamaha and unlucky Jan-Ole Jahnig. Kuban moved up to third position in the championship with his first IDM success.

Kawasaki pilots lead IDM junior class

With 20 points for second place among the IDM regular drivers, Colin Velthuizen (NL) from NUTEC-RT-Motorsports by SKM-Kawasaki took second position in the IDM table. He is now only six points apart from Angelo Licciardi, who fell back to 16th place in the second run due to a time penalty and was only able to score three points. So now two Kawasaki pilots are leading the IDM junior class.

Markus Reiterberger, meanwhile a pilot in the Superbike World Championship, insisted on looking past the Schleizer Dreieck as a guest.

IDM sidecars

In the IDM sidecars, the seven-time world champion Tim Reeves (GB) won both races in Schleiz with his Adolf RS-Yamaha. With his double success, Reeves and his co-driver Mark Wilkes extended the lead in the championship for the 600 sidecar. In the decision of the 1000 team, Mike Roscher (Grobalmerode) and co-driver Anna Burkard (CH) caused a surprise. In both races on the Schleizer Dreieck they finished second in the overall order with the LCR-BMW and won in their separately rated 1000 cc class ahead of championship leaders Andres Nussbaum / Manuel Hirschi (CH / CH) on an LCR-Suzuki. Roscher shortened the deficit in the IDM championship to six points.

Test drive campaigns by the manufacturer

KTM, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki presented their latest series models in the IDM paddock. With their test drives, the manufacturers also offered visitors a varied program off the racetrack. The framework program of the IDM also includes autograph sessions with IDM drivers for the popular fan proximity. In the evening a big party was celebrated high above the densely besieged campsite on the so-called Buchhubel with a driver introduction. Markus Reiterberger, who has won the IDM Superbike 1000 twice and is now contesting the Superbike World Championship, took a trip to Schleiz, as did the Supersport World Championship pilots Thomas Gradinger and Christian Stange. The IDM on the Schleizer Dreieck was once again a highlight in the calendar of Germany’s highest-ranking street series.
