Change of leadership in the premier class

Who will take the lead in the IDM premier class? Even before the races for the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) in Most, Czech Republic, that was the big question in the IDM Superbike 1000.

IDM Superbike 1000

Ilya Mikahlchik (EGS-alpha-Van Zon-BMW) could not defend the lead because the Ukrainian was missing from the second round of the season. Like his competitor Florian Alt (Wilbers-BMW), the two-time title winner followed his obligations in the Endurance World Championship.

Pole position went to Marc Moser (Bonovo action by MGM), but in both races the Dieburger was followed by bad luck. Dominic Schmitter (Hess Racing) won the first race ahead of the Frenchman Valentin Debise (Kawasaki Weber-Motos Racing) and the Belgian Bastien Mackels (Team SWPN). Visually, however, Luca Grunwald (Kiefer Racing) was the first to cross the finish line. Only the Bavarian was disqualified after the technical control. The reason: His over 200 hp BMW was too light. It did not undercut the required minimum weight of 170 kilograms by a whole kilo, but the regulations are binding.

In the second run, Valentin Debise won ahead of Dominic Schmitter. Luca Grunwald took third place.

In the second run, Valentin Debise won ahead of Dominic Schmitter. Luca Grunwald took third place and was really allowed to celebrate it. At the end of the day, that meant that three drivers from three nations were on the podium in each of the two races. After the second run even with three different motorcycle brands. Schmitter thus gave Yamaha the championship lead. Debise was catapulted to second place overall with his win and Mackels is third. The dethroned Mikhalchik, for whom only the title plays a role, slipped back to ninth place in the table. The poker face from Kiev must now consistently deliver the best times if he wants to win the championship. And that in a class in which the brands are fighting for prestige and the performance density at the top is getting closer and closer. This is also underlined by the new absolute lap record of Bastien Mackels, for whom it was still not enough to get a podium place in the second race.

IDM Supersport 600

In the IDM Supersport 600 there is a tie at the top between Patrick Hobelsberger (Bonovo action by MGM), the double winner from Most, and Valentin Debise (Kawasaki Weber-Motos Racing). The French all-rounder, starting in two classes, had traveled to the Czech Republic as the front runner in the 600 league, but on the dry track in the Autodrom there was no match for Hobelsberger. In the first run, three of his biggest opponents had dropped out in a collision in the first corner. Second place went to Yamaha rider Thomas Gradinger. The Supersport World Championship pilot from Austria and Hobelsberger buddy wants to keep fit for a World Championship comeback after separating from the World Championship team in the IDM. Marcel Brenner from Switzerland came in third after a remarkable fight with Valentin Debise.

IDM Supersport 600 2nd race: Patrick Hobelsberger (center) takes first place, Valentin Debise (left) takes second. Third in the second race: Max Enderlein.

In the second race Hobelsberger dominated again, but had Martin Vugrinec (ferQuest UNIOR Racing) behind him, who was one of the disadvantaged in the collision in the first corner in the first race. The Croatian is tough and currently fifth in the IDM and would like to continue to be among the top. Max Enderlein (M32 Racing) celebrated third place after the unsuccessful start to the season three weeks ago and was relieved to be back on the right track. The podium in both races was firmly in the hands of Yamaha.

IDM Supersport 300

In the junior class IDM Supersport 300 there were two races that were absolutely worth seeing. Walid Khan, who has not ridden a racing motorcycle for a year and a half, achieved a real coup with his victory on the KTM. Khan had prevailed in a group of six after the photo finish. Defending champion and team-mate, the only 15-year-old Lennox Lehmann, came in second ahead of Micky Winkler (Kawasaki Weber-Motos Racing).

In the second race, too, the photo finish had to be decisive. This time Lehmann crossed the finish line with a mini-lead of 0.0017 seconds ahead of his team-mate Dirk Geiger. Luca de Vleeschauwer (Fusport RT Motorsports by SKM-Kawasaki) saw the black and white checkered flag in third place. In the overall standings, Lehmann, as the leader, extended his lead to 31 points after four races.

IDM sidecar

In the IDM Sidecar, the first victory after an exciting race with early starts, pit lane drive-through penalties and even more overtaking maneuvers went to guests Mike Roscher (D) / Anna Burkard (CH) in the 1000 cc team. In this displacement class, there is no longer any rating due to the low number of vehicles. The 600 cc teams have finally overtaken them. Josef Sattler (D) / Luca Schmidt (D) got the full points. The Austrian Michael Grabmuller and his new co-driver Nicolas Bidault from France were happy about third place and second place. The finish of the second race was unchanged in the first two places, only this time Markus Schwegler (D) / Ondrej Kopecky (CZ) climbed onto the podium in third place.

“These are races as we want to see them”, IDM series manager Normann Broy draws a conclusion. “Spectacular fights and a lot of action around it make the championship exciting. You never know beforehand who will win and that is the special attraction. For the first time in a long time, we were able to greet spectators, even if the number was limited. But they gave our drivers a lot of support.”

As part of the supporting program, the Superstock 600 Cup, the Twin Cup and the Pro Superstock Cup provide the best entertainment.
