Drive a Pirelli or change series

From 2018, the Superbike class will be running uniformly with Pirelli tires. A difficult topic for the Wilbers BMW team. It has a Dunlop contract. It stays in the IDM anyway and changes the brand?

Team boss Benny Wilbers is a big advocate and fan of the IDM, but now he’s getting down to business. The fact that the IDM is now only allowed to drive with Pirelli knocked the native Dutchman down for a short time. He was one of the first to sign up for the 2018 season and sign the Belgian Bastien Mackels on the BMW S 1000 RR – albeit with a Dunlop contract that is financially well endowed. Wilbers is now faced with the decision: change series or drive with Pirelli in the future?

Wilbers tests Pirelli tires

The matter needs to be considered carefully, but Wilbers gives the Pirellis a chance. The team is currently testing in Spain until March 19. Stations are Valencia and Cartagena. It runs fine. The other drivers on the track, including none from the IDM, have so far left Mackels behind. “But it’s not like you switch to a new tire and set the best times straight away,” says Wilbers.

The decision will be made after the test days in Cartagena. “What worked in Valencia doesn’t have to work elsewhere. That is why we have chosen two completely different race tracks in terms of layout. We have to be sure what we’ll do in the future. ”The team truck and motorcycle are still branded with the Dunlop logo. A move to Pirelli would open up a budget gap in the team budget. Wilbers is currently talking to many potential patrons and hopes that the headquarters of BMW Motorrad would also raise a financial injection if it switched to Pirelli.
