Interview with MV Agusta about the F4 1000 R
Interview with MV Agusta
Adrian Morton, the designer of the new F4 1000 R.
MV Agusta presented the new F4 1000 R for the first time at the end of 2009 at the Eicma motorcycle fair in Italy. MOTORRAD employee Eva Breutel spoke to Adrian Morton (39), the designer of the new MV Agusta F4.

MV Agusta
Adrian Morton, the designer of the MV Agusta F4 1000 R, talks about the mission to redesign a design icon.
How do you do it, redesign a true design icon like the F4?
Phew, the answer is almost as difficult as the task itself. Basically, you lay down a general concept and then feel your way around. Redesigning the F4 is even harder than redesigning a Porsche. Porsche usually brings a further developed model every three years, while our F4, on the other hand, has remained unchanged for twelve years. Their appearance has established itself in people’s minds, which is why a new design is extremely critically viewed.
Did you MV Agusta Specifications made?
Yeah yeah Precisely because the F4 is considered the most beautiful sports motorcycle in the world, it had to be immediately recognizable as such. MV President Claudio Castiglioni has set this as the top guideline. And then of course it had to become more modern, lighter and more ergonomic.
How did you approach the task?
I’m not alone, we’re a whole team of designers, technicians and model makers. Basically we have agreed on more angular and therefore more modern shapes, but again not too angular, the MV customers don’t want KTM or Benelli. We have therefore kept the flowing baseline and proportions, but at the same time created more tension through the edges. You can see that well, for example, on the new rear end and on the mufflers: the line is the same, but the design is more angular and dynamic.
Where are the biggest changes?
A striking example is perhaps the tank, it is much shorter and lower and weighs 1.2 kilograms less. The new shape allows more freedom of movement, especially on the racetrack, and makes the seating position more comfortable, especially for taller drivers. Another example: the cockpit fairing is now much more accentuated. Or the headlight: the shape echoes that of the old one, but the new one is much smaller and much more effective. In short, we’ve redesigned practically every detail of the bike.
Then asked differently: Has something stayed the same??
Yes, the colors. Red and silver are a strong distinguishing feature of the F4, and we’re using them with a sharper dividing line to emphasize the motorcycle’s proportions. But the content has changed. People will especially appreciate that when they ride the motorcycle. Restyling is not an end in itself, rather it underlines the new dynamism and ergonomic improvements of the F4.
MV Agusta
Exactly: in the clay model, every gap must fit.
Many trade fair visitors in Milan have said that the new MV looks exactly like the old one. Is that what you wanted?
We have done our job with it, yes. Like most designers, I would love to create something radically new. The F4, however, stands for the rebirth of the MV Agusta brand, which has had a very distinctive design language since then: erotic and cultivated, combined with a certain understatement. I can’t just go over there and throw it all over the place.
Are you still satisfied??
Yes, in any case. The new F4 continues to look sexy, Italian, unique and desirable and brings with it modifications that make it current. Actually, as a designer, you can’t win over the restyling of such a motorcycle. If you do too little, the result is banal; if you do too much, people don’t like it. So it’s about finding the right balance, and I think we managed to do that.
