First half of 2017: Triumph’s market report

Interviews - First half of 2017: the market report of Triumph - Pre-owned TRIUMPH

Triumph has just completed the first half of 2017 with a jump of + 23.9% and has a total of 4,630 registrations. The general manager of the English brand in France, Jean-Luc Mars, gives his impressions to Site readers. First assessment…

Site: The Mondial de la moto will take place from October 4 to 14, 2018, in parallel with the Mondial de l’Auto. It seems a good idea in terms of media coverage and attendance … But what about the competitions of the Intermot in Cologne (October 3 to 7) and the international reference Eicma in Milan (early November) ?
Jean-Luc Mars, General Manager Triumph:
The motorcycle show is an important event, but the traditional formulas clearly no longer suited the expectations of a new and demanding public. The auto-motorcycle formula deserves to be tried … Motorcycles have incredible development potential by attracting new users. For my part, however, I am very vigilant that we have a real motorcycle show, with passion and enthusiasm, and not a mobility show. Competition from Cologne is troublesome but not prohibitive. Paris must find its place by innovating and offering something other than traditional salons.

MNC: In your opinion, to what extent was the first half of 2017 boosted by the switch to Euro4 (compulsory), the start of 2016 "hampered" by the late retrofit and sales of A2 models for all new permits ?
J-L. M.:
There is no anomaly in the first half of 2017! The French market is regaining good momentum, after a long air gap, linked to degraded economic conditions. The switch to Euro4, or rather the need to reduce stocks of Euro3 machines, certainly boosted the last quarter of 2016. The first half of 2017 is based on healthy growth where demand was high. The most notable effect of the Euro4 transition is that a number of flagship models have been completely renewed, for example in the roadster segment, and this renewed offer has generated great momentum..

MNC: Has the extension for all (ages) of the A2 license had any consequences on your activity? ?
J-L. M.:
The demand for A2 models is on the rise, and this phenomenon will certainly increase over the months. The product offer will also gradually expand, because we must not forget that the Franco-French measure to extend the A2 license was introduced hastily and without consultation..

MNC: What is your assessment of your first six months? ?
J-L. M.:
The record is obviously very good. Our growth is strong and is based on solid fundamentals: an evolving network, modern marketing and very good motorcycles, exciting to own and to ride..

MNC: The end of 2016 was exceptional because of the many registrations of Euro3 models. Should we expect a drop in sales at the end of 2017? ?
J-L. M.:
As far as Triumph is concerned, there were no fleet registrations in 2016. We had largely anticipated the transition, and wild promotions for destocking are not part of our commercial arsenal. !

MNC: How is the second half of 2016 looking for your brand? ?
J-L. M.:
The second half of the year is looking very good, with our new products now firmly in place and the arrival in the coming days of the Street triple 660 A2. We continue to calmly build sustainable growth, with our dealers, our customers and our prospects.
