Travel enduro for sports drivers

Is that still an adventure or is it already a super sport? At least the KTM 1190 Adventure wants to serve as a travel enduro, but with its brute performance it also appeals to drivers who saddle up in leather one-piece.

Travel endurists certainly do not belong to the comfortable armchair group. Even with a suitcase set and tank bag, you are dynamic on the move. Especially with adventurers and long-distance travelers, gallons of sweat flow when they chase their five-hundredweight horses over bumpy slopes. But the term “athletic” got the KTM 1190 Adventure in 2013 a different coloring. With 150 PS, which is sensational for the class, KTM had the new travel enduro compete against the top dog, the BMW R 1200 GS (125 PS). In terms of country road performance, Orange bagged the white and blue loosely. Suddenly, self-confessed shooters were also interested in this “Motorhome”. They left the Blades and Gixxer, stretched in their racing leathers from a stooped position and climbed the mighty, but beautifully slim-looking Enduro.

More like something for sports drivers?

However, the KTM 1190 Adventure did not become a mega-best seller. Over the entire construction period, it counted fewer registrations than a single year of the 1200 GS. The German endurance traveler probably prefers something more moderate and less sporty-radical. In addition, the 1190 tends to commute at high speeds even with light luggage, which is a real drawback on longer stretches of the motorway. Nevertheless, the Adventure found a lot of fans who delighted in good ergonomics, superb maneuverability, robust sound, electronic chassis and – as the first in its class – cornering ABS (from 2014).

The R variant is available on 21- and 18-inch rims with off-road tire sizes 90/90 ZR 21 and 150/80 ZR 18.

Incidentally, the R version is more suitable for globetrotters. With more suspension travel and – much more important on off-road tours – with narrower and larger wheels. With the right tires, the power bullet can actually master the worst slopes away from civilization. Heretical question: Who, however, needs 150 hp? Up until the construction stop in 2016, the KTM 1190 Adventure had left a mixed impression, at least among end-users, but it convinced sports riders to switch. A successful record that now seems to continue on the used market.

Offers for the KTM 1190 Adventure on the MOTORCYCLE market

Facelift

2013: Market launch of the 150 hp KTM 1190 Adventure and KTM 1190 Adventure R models (with 30 mm more front and rear suspension travel, 890 instead of 860 mm seat height, more ground clearance, 21- and 18-inch wheels and narrower tires). ABS is standard, electronic chassis (EDS) and tire pressure monitoring (TPMS) are optional extras. Prices standard / R model: 13,995 (with EDS / TPMS for 14,795) /14,895 euros. New registrations in Germany: 1,101 units.

2014: The combination of traction control and so-called cornering ABS is called “MSC” and is now available from Adventure. Standard / R model prices: 13,995 (with MSC / EDS / TPMS for 15,395) / 15,495 euros. New registrations in Germany: 1,537 units.

2015: Slight price increase for standard / R model: 13,995 (with MCS / EDS / TPMS for 15,545) /15,645 euros. New registrations in Germany: 592 pieces.

2016: Last model year. Standard / R model prices: 15,695 / 15,795 euros. New registrations in Germany: 763 units (due to sales in 2017 plus 119 units).

Market situation

Especially since the replacement by the 1290 successor, many copies of the KTM 1190 Adventure have been brought onto the used market. Offer: large. Prices: still quite high.

Example display: EZ 6/2014, 6,181 km. The retailer from Lower Saxony offers an R version including suitcases and top case from first hand.

Offers from 8,000 euros (low price level):

Example ad: 40,266 km, EZ 5/2013, I bought it first-hand from a dealer with a mileage of 39,146, but for professional reasons I only drove 1,120 km, lots of accessories! 9,499 euros (private provider from NRW)

Frequent driver machines with 50,000 kilometers and more are offered for 8,000 euros, but the range is thin. For a good 1,000 euros more, there are first-hand models with fewer kilometers and packed with a lot of accessories. The better offers.

Offers from 9,500 euros (medium price level):

Example ad: 29,188 km, EZ 3/2013, 1st hand, very neat condition with EDS / TMPS, crash bar, touring screen, heated grips, main stand, GPS mount, financing and trade-in possible, 10,290 euros (dealer from Hesse)

With new prices around 15,000 euros, used offers from dealers for a good third less are a good deal. Especially when an electronic chassis and cornering ABS are on board and only a previous owner has visibly well cared for the motorcycle.

Offers from 12,000 euros (low price level):

Example ad: 3,320 km, EZ 6/2016, new HU, one previous owner, from the authorized dealer, two-year guarantee, Akrapovic exhaust, full service history, 12,990 (dealer from Lower Saxony)

Many dealers offer impeccable, thoroughly checked new value bikes with a guarantee. What more do you want? Private providers can only score points at this level with dumping prices.

Dealer interview

Frank Buermann (49). Mixed dealer from Melle ([Link to www.ankauf-a30.de:ankauf-a30.de%7C_blank]) with a private soft spot for the color orange.

MOTORCYCLE: How do you convince interested parties about the KTM 1190 Adventure?

Frank Buermann: I usually don’t need that at all. The buyers are often at least 30 years old, have a good income and are already wearing KTM glasses. You are fully and specifically informed, know the usual market prices, I don’t need to offer them anything else. Sometimes they come from far away, take a quick test drive with me, pay, and that’s it. Absolutely responsible buyers who already know in advance that the KTM 1190 Adventure is cool.

MOTORCYCLE: Transferring from BMW?

Frank Buermann: Not only but also. Some trade in their GS for the KTM because the BMW is too boring and well-behaved for them. Personally, I also prefer the KTM 1190 Adventure: Totally fun machine, always too fast, in my opinion does not belong in the travel enduro category, it is too sporty for that. In order to be able to keep up with other sports heaters while sitting upright in the clique, the Adventure is a top choice and therefore also attractive as a new, used vehicle. Maybe a bit too sporty for normal drivers, that’s a brisk thing! But you can also stroll around on a motorcycle, really versatile.

MOTORCYCLE: Which accessories are in demand??

Frank Buermann: Amazingly often, I am offered full huts: suitcases, protective bars, ergo seats, additional headlights and many other parts from the Power Parts original accessories. KTM people want quality and don’t save every penny. This is good for the used buyer, because he pays a comparatively small premium for the originally expensive stuff. With sparsely equipped specimens, however, I also have a harder time selling them quickly.

MOTORCYCLE: So everything is great, no disadvantages?

Frank Buermann: Yes, the secondhand machine is still quite expensive and requires regular maintenance, preferably by the authorized dealer. Only these are connected to the KTM network and receive all the necessary updates, recalls and technical information about the model. We can do oil and filter changes as well as smaller jobs ourselves, but without the right software you can quickly reach your limits. This applies to us independent workshops, but also to private screwdrivers. When buying the KTM 1190 Adventure, you should therefore bear in mind that regular inspections at the authorized dealer and the corresponding costs should be taken into account. But it’s worth it, because with good support, the 1190 is good for 100,000 kilometers and more.
