Ready to race is known to apply to all bikes from Mattighofen. From the 50 SX to the 1290 Super Adventure, from the 125cc Duke to the 1190 RC 8. But there is more: Over the years, many two-wheeled Austrians have been given a refined R version: better chassis, higher-quality components, chic look. Also the KTM 690 SMC got a sister model with the SMC R in 2012, which actually does everything better: more displacement, more power, longer service intervals. But the R is not only a noble SMC, but actually also the successor. One can argue whether it is just an equipment variant or a new, independent model.

In the end it doesn’t matter, because both of the systems are very similar: They bring a competitive feeling to the road – it’s not for nothing that SMC stands for Supermoto Competition! They are a fun factor on Germany’s roads, they can be wild, steep and sloping. The fact that they even stormed the top ten registration numbers in the course of their career is also due to their pretty looks. Especially of course the nobler KTM 690 SMC R, among other things with milled and anodized aluminum parts. But they are also enthusiastic about their character, are even good for the tour and survive even the almost unthinkable everyday journeys, which are almost unthinkable for vehicles suitable for competition, with relative ease.

Relative? Yes, because the KTM 690 SMC is actually considered to be robust. Provided that you warm up and wait carefully, the material and technology can withstand a lot – and yet even a device that is so tailored to fitness has one or the other problem zone: The rocker arms in particular are vulnerable, the steering stops sometimes break in the event of a fall, and the display likes to fall individual segments of the liquid crystals. But the biggest weak point: the price. Nothing goes below 5,500 euros, and offers above the new price are not uncommon. Ultimately, of course, it is a case of supply and demand. There are numerous offers, but there are also many interested parties. But who knows: when the Euro 4-SMC R comes in 2019, used prices could soon fall.
Facelift – 2008 to 2016
2008: First model year of the KTM 690 Supermoto Competition (SMC). It is not based on the 690 Supermoto presented in 2006, but on the also new 690 Enduro. Both have in common: 654 cm³ LC4 engine, tubular space frame with integrated air filter, self-supporting tank-bench rear. Differences: KTM 690 SMC with 17-inch wheels, longer secondary transmission, larger brake discs, longer suspension travel, one kilo more weight and one centimeter lower seat height. Color: Orange / Black; Price: 8,795 euros.
2012: the KTM 690 SMC R. replaces the SMC. Differences: 690 cm³, 66 hp instead of the previous 63, spring travel reduced to 250 millimeters front and rear (previously 275/265 mm), triple clamp milled instead of cast, plastic parts redesigned, seat more comfortable. Price: 8,495 euros.
2014: The KTM 690 SMC R receives the Duke engine with double ignition and ride-by-wire. The ABS that can be switched off is new. Price: 8,695 euros.
2016: For the time being last model year of the KTM 690 SMC R. Price: 8,995 euros; 2017 on sale for 9,395 euros.
Market situation
The inventory is large, as is the used range. But the mainly privately offered KTM 690 SMCs and SMC Rs are currently very expensive.
Low price level from 5,500 euros:
Sample ad: KTM 690 SMC, 30,450 km, EZ 07/2008, HU 06/2020, 2nd hand, 63 PS, sports exhaust installed, original is included, oil and oil filter change 500 kilometers before, 5,500 euros (private offer from Baden-Wurttemberg).
The cheapest offers consist exclusively of SMCs of the first year. These have been in service for up to ten years and are not infrequently tinkered with. In this case, however, the original silencer is better than a cheap sports exhaust.

In the middle price segment, the useful equipment extras such as crash pads, oil thermometers, underbody protection and handguards are increasing. There are also the first SMC R models from the earlier series.
High price level from 8,500 euros:

For an SMC R, 8,500 euros seem to be almost cheap at the moment, half of the used offers are above this. Compared to the former new price, the prices are actually too high. Even negotiating skills can only help to a limited extent.
Dealer interview with Robbie Bauer (KTM Stuttgart)
Robbie Bauer (33), master two-wheeler mechanic at KTM Stuttgart, about the sumo hype and unnecessary and harmful modifications to the KTM 690 SMC.
MOTORCYCLE: With up to 690 cm³ the LC4 of the KTM 690 SMC was not the largest, but at least at times the most powerful single cylinder. That gnaws at its durability?
Robbie Bauer: No. Here in Service we always have vehicles with 50,000 kilometers and more on the clock. A lack of durability is therefore not really an issue for the large single cylinder with good care.

MOTORCYCLE: However, the KTM 690 SMC and SMC R are not entirely without technical weaknesses. Where could there be problems??
Robbie Bauer: The rocker arm rollers sometimes cause problems. It’s a bit like rolling a dice: With one they break several times, with the other, however, there is never a problem with it.
MOTORCYCLE: So what does that mean for me when I look at a used one?
Robbie Bauer: It is not absolutely necessary that the rocker arms have been replaced. During the 10,000 inspection, the parts are also assessed. If they have been exchanged, that’s of course a big plus. During the inspection, a look at the maintenance condition often tells you a lot about the technical condition: If you clean your motorcycle every now and then, you usually pay more attention to sufficient oil and warming it up.
MOTORCYCLE: The first hurdle is to even find a KTM 690 SMC. What do you think about the used offer and the prices shown?
Robbie Bauer: If we had one, we could sell it for really good money. In fact, there are hardly any dealer offers, most are sold privately directly over the Internet. And even then, the things are sometimes traded more expensive than they once cost again. Still, the run on the motorcycle is incredible.
MOTORCYCLE: How do you feel about add-on parts such as the sports exhaust that is remarkably often installed?
Robbie Bauer: In the “Power parts” There was an alternative exhaust for the SMC, Remus and Co. are also seen more often. Why not? I also consider crash pads to be sensible equipment. But there is also a lot of Kruscht: Any kind of cheap rear silencer that would make your motorcycle go out at the traffic light, for example. The main problem with the SMC is really: there is too much and often unprofessional tinkering.
MOTORCYCLE: Would the Husqvarna 701 Supermoto be an alternative?
Robbie Bauer: The Husky just has a different look. But from a purely technical point of view.
