Barely positive in the first half of the year, the French motorcycle market benefited from the net sales growth of 125 in July and August (+ 22.5% and + 11.8%). Large cubes remain less profitable (+ 0.4% then -4.2%). MNC takes stock of summer 2015.

Generously relayed by the "big" French media, the + 10% jump in passenger car sales in France in August 2015 (following a + 2.3% increase in July) will no doubt have delighted fans of the sacrosanct growth.

By communicating these data, the Committee of French automakers (CCFA) however specified that the increase in sales in August was in fact limited to "+4.7% with comparable number of working days compared to August 2014"(21 Vs 20).

While welcoming the good health of the French automotive market in the eighth month, François Roudier, communications director of the CCFA, also noted that it was necessary "temper (in terms of volumes sold) because in August, people are more on the beaches than in the concessions".

The same reservations must be expressed about the – much smaller – French motorcycle market … which makes the increase in sales of motorcycles and scooters (over 50 cc) of + 2.2% in August excessively low and shy: not enough to warm the atmosphere among professionals in the sector.

Especially since looking for the little beast, some observers may consider that August 15, 2014 (a Friday) had more penalized the business than August 15, 2015 which fell on a Saturday. This year, the Juillettistes could not go on a long weekend to the sea, to the mountains or to the countryside, far from the concessions….

The month of July, on the other hand, proved to be more satisfactory for motorcycle and scooter dealers. Admittedly, Tuesday July 14, 2015 represented for them one day less to bait and / or shoe the client (the National Day was celebrated on a Monday last year). But at least July 2015 and July 2014 had the same number of working days (22), so that the formidable + 22.5% recorded by the 125 cannot be disputed by statisticians, nor the very small but positive one. + 0.4% of large engines (for the complete assessment of the motorcycle market last summer, read).

To explain the fine performance of the small-displacement engines, we can mention the weather, which is much better than last year with "a very hot and very dry start to summer, marked by two successive heat waves in July", Meteo France analysis.

We note in passing that according to French meteorologists, "August was cooler and rainier over most of the country". This grayness could partly explain the downturn in sales during the eighth month…

Finally, with regard to large cubes, Site believes that the results of the sector are necessarily weighed down – and will be even more so this fall – by the restricting of 100 horses, a Franco-French specificity which will end on January 1, 2016 (read our .
