The 125 cc plumb the mood for the month of May

Market reports - The 125 cc plummets the mood in May - The 125 cc plumbs the mood

The motorcycle market posted a decline of -7.5% in May … But this general trend actually hides a drop in registrations of 125 (-19.6%) and an increase in those of large engines (+ 4.3%). Figures, graphs and analyzes…

The 125 cc lead the atmosphere

In May 2009, 23,528 motorized two-wheelers over 50 cc were registered. Compared to 25,444 units in May 2008, this represents a decrease of -7.5%. However the origins of this new slide are multiple…

We note first of all the poor score of the 125 cc: -19.6% compared to last year. But can we really blame them? The euphoria of 2006 and 2007, generally maintained in 2008, seems to be coming to an end: it remains to wait for "motorists" to replace their mounts….

But with such high-performance, reliable and safe products – which their manufacturers boast – 125 motorcycle and scooter renewals are unlikely to happen anytime soon! Fortunately, with a significant annual mileage – compared to "real bikers" -, "commuters" will allow dealers to sell a number of parts and to chain oil changes and other revisions….

On the large-displacement side, however, the beautiful month of May ended with an increase: 13,389 registrations last month against 12,386 in May 2008, ie + 4.3% among "over 125".

But by detailing the results of manufacturers in this sector, we discover a new important imbalance: sales of Europeans are rising, those of an American – what which? – explode while those of the Japanese stagnate or even fall !

Finally, if the number of working days is identical between the last two months of May (19 days), the number of "concession opening days" varied greatly: 21 in 2008 against only 19 in 2009. A difference statistically not negligible !

Likewise, we can see on the calendar that the month of May has seen several long weekends this year … and sunny in addition! Would the French have preferred to bask in the sun rather than buy 125s? We can believe it.
