A world of sweetness

Charming in its black dress, the 750 Nevada is beautiful but wise for a 750 twin. A Moto Guzzi-style custom, that is to say that holds the road but unfortunately lacks a bit of engine.

Discovery

Founded 21 years ago, Nevada has hardly changed since its inception. Slightly revised two years ago due to standardization, it is making common cause with its sisters, the V7s. Less emblematic, it still benefits from the sobriety of this “Aquila Nera” (Black Eagle) version which highlights its lines. At the first rays of the sun, the many chromes titillate your pupils and this Nevada that we thought we knew too well ends up catching you in the eye.

In the saddle

Getting on a custom is no problem, even for a little guy like me (1.68 m). The 767 mm high saddle offers a rather low and comfortable seat. Just lifted up and arched back properly, the handlebars fall naturally under your hands, leaving your back straight. The slightly forward-placed footrests complete a relaxed, but not custom-made riding position. The rider keeps good control of the machine, nothing has to do with a chopper position with feet in front and arms outstretched. It’s almost road here, just a little relaxed.

Under your nose a small classic dashboard, with white needles on a black background. We would have preferred the opposite. It’s retro and above all more classy. By the way, we can see very well in the retro. Two small digital displays show you the kilometers and the outside temperature inside the meters.

Contact

On the way ! The engine snorts gently, showing good discretion. Due to its relatively small displacement, the overturning torque is hardly felt. It is very classic: a twin 2 valves cooled by air and fed by an injection. Its tilted distribution allows it a maximum power of 48 hp at 6800 rpm, which is modest for a 750 (3 times less than a GSXR!).

In the city

From the first meters, we discover with pleasure the astonishing flexibility of this twin which does not knock and picks up at very low speed with incredible smoothness. Admittedly, it’s not very manly, but in town, what a joy. In addition, the wide handlebars, but not too much, give an extraordinary handling to this Nevada. It feels like riding a 250. Saying that 40 years ago Honda hit the headlines with its “big” CB 750 and that today we have the impression, justified, of driving a “small” motorcycle, perfectly adapted. for urban use! It pleasantly surprises this Guzzi. Let’s see further.

Highway

The box, a bit hard, has only 5 gears, but that’s perfectly enough as the engine is docile. At legal speeds, we do not receive excessive wind pressure and the vibrations are very discreet. Sitting comfortably, we swallow the kilometers without suffering on a smooth surface. The highway is not the Nevada’s cup of tea, but it submits to it without flinching…. and without passion. Come on, quickly take an exit ramp … towards the national road.

National

If you are looking for cannon acceleration, lightning overtaking, go your way. This 750 offers more of a world of smoothness. Strictly speaking, it doesn’t take too long, but it’s still limited. His style is more flower to the teeth. However, the chassis does its job well. He is rigid. On his handlebars we are serene. The engine is not sluggish, it is even quite alive, but always remains wise.

Departmental

Phew a little bend and relief, things are already better. The Nevada reveals the qualities of its chassis. The course is good and the "real custom" will need to behave well. The bike is light (184 kg dry plus a low center of gravity) and fitted with narrow tires (110 front, 130 rear). In fact it swings on its own at the first beat of the eyelashes. No need to force, we wind gently, as with a small displacement. Definitely, on his handlebars, in town or on small roads, we really have the impression of driving a 250 or a 350. Another good surprise: sufficient ground clearance, given the purpose of the machine and very correct in the absolute. But if you set out in pursuit of a green diamond (or whatever) you will discover a slow box and the limits of the motorcycle..

Moto Guzzi Nevada Aquila Nera

Braking

The simple 320mm front disc with its 4-piston caliper is quite up to the task. It does not require too much effort from the handle. Its rear counterpart in 260 mm is also perfectly suited to the performance and weight of the bike. RAS.

Moto Guzzi Nevada Aquila Nera

Comfort

A comfortable and natural position, a wide and suitably padded saddle, a motor that does not vibrate or very little *, with a non-adjustable Marzocchi 40 mm fork that does its job well…. So, it’s all right ? Yes almost. Almost, because the rear shocks of average quality and not adjustable tarnish the picture. Too bad because they still have 130mm of travel to do their job, which is honorable. We feel here that the manufacturer wanted to save money…. misplaced.

* (for the record, a V open at 90 ° is naturally balanced for the first order forces which generate the largest vibrations at the motor rotation frequency)

Consumption

With its 5.4 mkg at 3600 rpm only and its great flexibility, we feel that the engine has been worked to run smoothly from low revs. It can climb towers and even climb the breaker, but its raging 48hp isn’t going to siphon off your tank like an aircraft carrier. At around 5.5L the 750 isn’t a performance economy model, but it’s okay. The tank which contains only 14 liters, 4 of which are in reserve will require you to take out the credit card every 180 km if you do not like riding in reserve.

Moto Guzzi Nevada Aquila Nera

Convenient

Windshield, cylinder guard, central stand, rigid saddlebags, alarm, all of this is available as an option in the manufacturer’s catalog…. for a fee. Too bad because it is already not given this Guzzi (8390 €). All the same remains the transmission by shaft and universal joint as standard.

Moto Guzzi Nevada Aquila Nera

Conclusion

Pretty, easy, wise, Nevada is steeped in good intentions, but at € 8,390 that’s not enough. It’s expensive for such a simple bike, equipped with very basic shocks, an air-cooled 2-valve rocker engine and a single front disc brake. That’s € 600 more than a Sportster 883, admittedly less versatile but much more endearing. The technology is comparable, with an additional shaft drive for the Guzzi, but the heart is not there. Yet the 65 kg that separate it from the American may appeal to girls who will appreciate its softness, comfort, ease of handling and efficiency. Then she might blame him for the gearbox and the clutch control a bit firm..

Strong points

  • handling
  • motor flexibility
  • shaft transmission

Weak points

  • engine too wise
  • slightly stiff rear damping
  • high price

  1. I do not know this product at all, but I am an "old" biker, and a long practice of the motorcycle, trial, enduro, road sport, road GT, road trail, Japanese and German for 20 years..

With the speed going at the same pace as the road crackdown, I have a hard time climbing my GS Adventure LC and the speed has become taboo (limit lowered to 80 km / h)!!!

So I’m starting to look at custom motorcycles, and this Indian brand makes me particularly envious of the Roadmaster. The tests say good, but 2 things still hold me back the side stand rubs very easily and the engine heats up a lot (I already gave in 2001 with the FJR 1300).

Are there answers to these 2 concerns or not yet or are they not that annoying??

Otherwise I think I will give it a try in the coming months (my GSA LC is only 2000 km, but it’s high), then we’ll see if Indian, Harley, or something else..

  2. The engine is a bit tight for the fight that’s for sure, but so pleasant on small roads. The vibrations? it’s a Guzzi and it’s just the engine that lives .

It changes the sanitized machines of the competition .cool

  3. Great article. Superb this Indian. I’m not addicted to this kind of motorcycle, HD is archaic, they have small tanks while they are intended for the ride. They are not very powerful and the ground clearance is fair. Nevertheless this Scoot Bobber is superb! not given and what to say with the options, small tank, limited ground clearance but it is nice!

  4. Indian … The Scout Sixty is a classic modern custom, dynamic cruiser with flawless styling and appreciable efficiency.

    What a look!

  5. yes very nice becane but being a young A2 license (40 years old), what is it BRIDED at 47.5 CV ??

    almost 30CV less !!!

we do not find any test on clamped machines, yet this is the essential question for a beginner A2…

knowing what weighs 250KG plus my little 60 and that of my wife 50, lol 360 KG !!! Am I still going forward ???
