Impending bankruptcy, takeover by Aprilia. The times when Moto-Guzzi’s first V11 appeared were damn resinous and difficult to digest for loyal fans. The motorcycle manufacturer from Mandello del Lario finally pulled a sharp arrow out of its quiver. The first quickly became Moto Guzzi V11 Sport from 1999 acted as the legitimate successor to the V7 Sport, the over-Guzzi from the 70s. Not only the loyal, die-hard and long-suffering fans of the cult brand were enthusiastic. The MOTORRAD testers also came back deeply impressed by the first outing with Moto Guzzi’s new flagship. Of course, it is the brand-typical V-Twin with longitudinally rotating crankshaft that inspires. Precisely because he does exactly what Moto Guzzi fans have made into flesh and blood: throb, hammer, thump! Vibrate, shake, tingle. In short: An earthquake is in motion again here.

“The best Guzzi that has ever been produced in series”
You quickly get used to the blows that go through the beams due to cardan reactions during load changes and gear changes. It’s just typical Guzzi, despite the moment support on the frame. However, the 245 kilogram first edition of the Moto Guzzi V11 shows slight chassis weaknesses. Thank goodness the new owner Aprilia (from 2000) doesn’t care, which is why the V11 types from model year 2001 can be moved noticeably more stable through the Winkelwerk. The trick: a 19 millimeter longer wheelbase, which is achieved by moving the steering head forward.
MOTORRAD tester Mini Koch, who in 2001 chased the renovated Moto Guzzi V11 through the countryside in the form of Le Mans, experienced “the best Guzzi that has ever been produced in series”. Provided that the machinist understands the classic Guzzi craft: the gears are sorted in good time in the cornering area, the gas is applied early and then only constantly wound.
The stylish Moto Guzzi V11 Le Mans is joined by chic offshoots, which until 2006 were only sold in homeopathic cans (1700 pieces), but are marching towards lover status. Even so, the circle to the worthy Nonna is now full, the V7.

Market situation
Modest new sales and many special models in small editions: Anyone looking for the desired V11 has to be patient, but should go looking for it tomorrow at the latest.
Low price level from 3,500 euros
With negotiating skills, prices can be achieved well below the four-thousand-meter mark. But these Guzzis already have tens of thousands of kilometers under their belt and have hiked through many hands. The majority of the offers come from private customers.
Medium price level from 5,000 euros
Around the 5000 region there is a mix of all types from all years of construction, which on average were not moved 3000 kilometers per year. If the mileage is so low, make sure that there is no maintenance backlog or expensive damage to the floor.
High price level from 6,500 euros
Welcome to the world of lovers and collectors. In the upper four-digit range, V11 types appear that are particularly rare (such as the special Tenni model), particularly tuned (e.g. conversions by the Guzzi Pope Dynotec) or are almost as good as new.
Dealer interview
The brothers Martin (62) and Uli (58) from Aglasterhausen in the Odenwald are die-hard Italo experts. The Moto Guzzi brand was part of their range from 1998 to 2004.
Who really has to be more capable of suffering: a Guzzi dealer or the Guzzi driver?
[Uli] Those were difficult times back then, just when it came to the procurement of spare parts or guarantee and warranty work. The good thing is: If you buy a used V11 today, you don’t have to waste any more thought on it. It is only important that he has a dealer with a Guzzi weakness in the vicinity to solve any problems.
What problems did the V11 take off??
[Martin] As with so many Guzzis, the error was in the details and was caused by sloppy processing. The V11 types from 2001 onwards, whose engines were coated with black shrink paint, had a major problem. It really went up on some vehicles. The engines had to be completely removed, blasted and repainted. That was an extremely complex operation. Then there was always trouble with cheap starter relays, the speedometer drive or tachometer.
The V11 series was accompanied by many conversion or improvement campaigns: replacement of shift levers and springs, sliding sleeves in the transmission, connecting rods. Can you now use the V11 without hesitation when all of this has been processed?
[Martin] Of course you should take a close look at the history of every V11, but that applies to every used motorcycle: What is the general condition, are there any hidden traces of a fall, what about wear and tear? With the V11, the same test points apply as with every Guzzi: check the universal joint on the cardan shaft, check the electrical system, make sure that the gearbox runs smoothly during test drives and – especially with the special models – watch out for the single-disc clutch.
Let us assume that the majority of the V11 types have been maintained and optimized accordingly over the years. Now is the ideal time to search for used ones?
[Uli] Most of the people who bought new cars back then were seasoned motorcyclists. For them, the V11 was the ideal second motorcycle – so it had the status of a lover from the start. Due to the low distribution, the potential is there for the V11 to become a coveted collector’s item with corresponding value retention.
