Confined with … Loris Baz, Yamaha Ten Kate rider
What are the main players in the motorcycle world doing during the lockdown linked to the Covid-19 pandemic? Loris Baz, Yamaha Ten Kate World Superbike rider, spoke to Journal moto du Net.
MNC: Where are you confined ?
Loris Baz : I am confined to Cordon, in Haute-Savoie, my home village. I did not stay at home in Switzerland because I live in a small apartment with my girlfriend. I preferred to come to the mountains, a little higher up, to train and be outdoors, so I’m at a friend’s house with three friends, my parents and my girlfriend. It’s nice and it helps to pass the time faster.

MNC: How are your days going? ?
L. B. : I wake up quite early, not too much sleep in the morning … I exercise in the morning, on an empty stomach depending on what we have eaten in the evening or a good session after breakfast. It is my coach who continues to do my programs which have evolved, much like winter programs with a lot of intensity. We’re lucky so far we’ve had a blast since we’ve been here! We have a lot of work outside on the property as well as there were storms and a lot of trees fell last year. So for the past month we’ve been spending our days chopping wood, pulling down the logs with the army 4x4s that I have with my father. In the afternoon I still do a little sport with strengthening, then in the evening we have an aperitif and we eat, we play games or watch TV.
MNC: What do you miss the most ?
L. B. : What I miss the most is the bike and the races, for sure! We should be in the middle of the season, fighting, progressing to get on the podiums, etc., but we have the impression of being in the middle of winter… It’s a bit like last year for me, so I’ve been in this state for two years in a row, without the initial adrenaline rush. What I miss the least, not much, but the cool thing is being able to spend time with my loved ones! This is the first time in my life that I stay in the same place for a month, that I sleep in the same bed for a month, that I am with my girlfriend a month in a row, with my parents, etc. But I can’t wait to get back to a more normal life for me! My life is a lot of traveling, a lot of traveling, because I am not made to stay in one place !
MNC: Are you afraid ?
L. B. : No I’m not scared at all, honestly. I am touching wood but no one around me has been touched. I just try to respect everything that is said as much as possible so that we get out of it as quickly as possible, I think it’s in everyone’s interest.
MNC: A book, a film, a series, a record to recommend ?
L. B. : I’ve rather watched old movies since I got here. We often played old Louis de Funes with my friends, the classics of Splendid, "Baby Sitting" and stuff like that. Oddly, I spend less time on the computer and the networks than in my normal life because I have a lot of activities outside and I try to do a lot of sports. In series I like Elite and Casa de Papel on Netflix. Usually I like to keep them for travel and watch them on my own on the plane, but now with another month I don’t know if I will be able to last that long !
MNC: Your Favorite Motorcycle Video ?
L. B. : I like to watch old GPs, the 500 era was magical and the early MotoGP years too. The videos of Casey Stoner, the videos of the Superbike of the time… When I started in Superstock in the years 2008, 2009 and 2010 with still the magic of Superbike, Corser, Haga, Bayliss, all these guys there … Not especially documentaries but mostly old races, that’s what drives me and that’s what I love to watch.
MNC: The first thing you will do at the end of the lockdown ?
L. B. : The first thing I’ll do after confinement is get out and ride! I think that’s what we’ll do with the team, organize a practice session right away. Getting back on the bike, picking up the pace and continuing the work from the start of the season, going to see all the other friends that I could not see during the confinement but above all to go motorbike !
