The command changes hands as the lap goes down to 1’33.500, to the advantage of Fabio Quartararo. The young Frenchman is pursued by Viñales, Rins and the Epargaro brothers. Takaaki Nakagami also invites himself into the Top 5 to save Honda’s honor, non-existent since the absence of its leader Marc Marquez.

Then Joan Mir took the reins in 1’33.236 on his Suzuki, while Brad Binder fell without seriousness with his official KTM. The South African beginner immediately returns to his stand to leave with his second motorcycle. Quartararo then Rins then hit the "33" bar: the Suzuki official kept the advantage in 1’33.015 !

Everyone then seeks his second wind in anticipation of the effort to come in the last minutes, which does not prevent seeing a "hot potato" overtaking between Quartararo and Viñales: the n ° 12 is surprised by the outside by the young French. Here is what promises next year when they will team up !

Duel to come between Yamaha and KTM ?

"Mack" – best time in FP1 – sign shortly after a lap of 1’32.928: very interesting performance because it was achieved with a medium-hard climb well started by 15 laps. In short: the Spanish is preparing for his race! Rossi does the same with the same tire combination, but not the same success: the Italian moves between 12th and 15th position…

Like this morning, Dovizioso spends a lot in his box because of small technical problems on his Ducati: the Italian returns to the pit about ten minutes from the end, pointing his dashboard to his chief mechanic, perhaps for him indicate an error message. The Italian will end the day in a distant 11th place…

Three minutes from the end, the hunt for "pole" begins: Brad Binder is the first to let go of the cavalry in 1’32.920, followed by Morbidelli in 1’32.367 … and Fabio Quartararo in 1’32.189! The young Frenchman puts everyone in agreement with this time slightly faster than that of Viñales this morning (1’32.198).

Next step: beat the absolute record for the Italian track that Jorge Lorenzo has held since 2018 in 1’31.629. Perfectly achievable challenge in MNC’s opinion given the hellish pace of this first day !

The Petronas-SRT team can have a smile as Franco Morbidelli classifies the second private M1 in the championship leader‘s aspiration (+0.178 sec), ahead of the KTM of Pol Espargaro and Iker Lecuona. The pace and consistency of the two Spaniards make it clear that RC16s are still likely to play ahead of Sunday !

Valentino Rossi for his part finished in 5th place after having been discreet during this whole session. The Italian nevertheless shows half a second on Quartararo, just like his teammate Viñales who follows him in 6th place: the two Yamaha officials however mainly focused on their race settings..

Zarco will no longer be with Avintia in 2021 !

Johann Zarco only appears in 14th place on his 2019 Ducati, perhaps disturbed by the turmoil over his future: the manager of his team confides at the MotoGP.com microphone that "Zarco will no longer be with us next year : I am 99% sure that Enea Bastianini will join our team ", predicts Ruben Xaus.

This update from the former Spanish rider suggests that Johann Zarco will recover a factory Ducati either in the official team instead of Dovizioso, or in the Pramac team if Francesco Bagnaia is preferred to him. To be continued !
