Market reports - Motorcycle market: big cubes lead the way - Big cubes lead the way

The end of the first half of 2013 is approaching and the motorcycle and scooter market (over 50 cc) continues to decline in France … In May, the decline in sales was limited to -7.3%, thanks to large displacement. Figures, graphs and website analysis.

Big cubes lead the way

May was not a good month for the French motorcycle market (motorcycles and scooters with a cylinder capacity of over 50 cc): the 15,754 registrations recorded represent a decrease of -7.3% compared to the volume carried out in May 2012 (read our).

However, the bar set at 17,000 units was not very high: last year, the market recorded a drop of -22% compared to the – very – pretty month of May 2011. In all, it has been sixteen months since the market records more or less marked declines … You said hard and long ?

This year, the month of May had as few working days as in 2012: 19 days against 22 in 2011. We note above all that the second week of May 2013 included two public holidays (Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9) and that that undoubtedly contributed to slowing down the activity. Even more than the three bridges of May 2012? Mystery…

The weather – yes, again! – is certainly not unrelated to this new decline in sales: according to Meteo France and its statistics compiled since 1959, May 2013 ranks second among the coldest months of May and fourth of the rainiest months…

However, by observing the sales tables on MNC, we can see some manufacturers who manage to slalom between the drops. Among the 125 (-18.5%), they are only two: KTM and … Mash, the new brand of the SIMA which markets in particular the small vintage motorcycles Seventy and Seventy-five.

In terms of large cubes (-1.1%), five brands showed positive results in May 2013: Kawasaki, BMW, Suzuki, Harley-Davidson and Triumph. But beware, some progress is only relative: being "better" than last year does not necessarily mean being "good" this year….

Fortunately, there are a few positive signs: the builders who have the capacity – the courage, the possibility, the will? – renewing their range and releasing models that appeal to French customers are generally rewarded.

But it is still necessary to correctly identify the needs of customers … or their desires. This last point is particularly true on the market of the big engines, where the emotional aspect plays more than on the market of the 125. The "bikers, the real ones" are ready to spend large sums – even if everything is relative – to satisfy their passion.

It is precisely this passion that allows the "over 125 cc" market to hold up better today. Will this trend increase in the coming months? Yes, provided of course that the winter 2012-2013 – which has now lasted eight months – does not also decide to cut the road…
