Market reports - Uneven first quarter 2011 for the motorcycle market - An uneven first quarter

While the big cubes performed well in March, the 125cc stumbled. And this observation is also valid for the whole of the first quarter of 2011. Figures, graphs and analyzes: Site draws up a new market report.

An uneven first trimester

The year 2011 started well for the French motorcycle market: in three months, 39,626 motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc were registered against 37,342 last year over the same period and the same number of working days ( read). But as often, this general increase of + 6.1% hides strong disparities….

Indeed, the 125 cc show a decrease in sales of -2.3% over the first quarter (-14.4% over the month of March) while the large cubes enjoy an increase of + 11.2% ( and even + 15.3% last month)! The March sun has therefore benefited large-displacement motorcycles more than 125 scooters.

The same goes for the manufacturers: in March 2011, Peugeot and Honda for the 125s and Yamaha, Honda, BMW, Harley-Davidson, Triumph and Aprilia for the “over 125s” achieved good, even excellent scores. On the other hand, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kymco, Sym and MBK for the 125 part and Suzuki (again …) in the large-displacement category recorded disappointing, even worrying results….

And while the new compulsory 7-hour training for B licenses wishing to buy a 125 cc (or an MP3 LT) slows down sales of 125s, the many new 2011 products already in dealerships are boosting sales of large cubes..
