Road rallies - Rallye du Dourdou 2012: half rain, half Corsica! - The day after...

Corsican driver Carlo Scanu (Honda 450 CRF) won the ninth rally in Dourdou ahead of Florent Derrien and Flavien Coitoux, both on KTM 690 SMC. An unusual podium for an extraordinary rally: but where are the leaders ? Report.

The day after…

Saturday morning, one hour of assistance is allocated before departure. The pilots had a short night, it’s going to be tough! Fortunately the rain has stopped, the sun makes timid appearances but the road is dry, this is the main !

In sidecars, the crew of the Choda 1100 Kawasaki n ° 238 Amblard / Bourdiaux will not make the daytime stage: Alain withdraws, too tired by this trying night. Too bad, because the title of the Sidecar category was still within its reach: its direct rival, the Laur / Ferrieu team, following its exit from the road at the rallye du Morvan (read), is diminished (Marie-Laure Ferrieu is still recovering, her healing is going well but still requires time). Herve does not give up, however: he is present at this ninth Dourdou rally at the controls of another Choda sidecar, a 1300 Suzuki loaned by David Bleuzet, with another "passenger" in the person of Maxence Sonhilac. We must not give up in the championship !

At the first special of the day, Mouret this time, Julien Toniutti won the tassel and slammed the best time on the handlebars of the official KTM 990 Superduke in 2’01.89, a big second ahead of Paul-Christian Piazza (2’03.08). Mickael Porcu is third at seven tenths on Husaberg 570 FS.

The loop, which is done in the opposite direction to that at night, is much more pleasant during the day in good weather than at night in the rain! But navigation remains quite worrying and many people still fall under the yoke of the hourly penalty…

In Villecomtal, second special of the loop, the young Corsican Mickael Porcu is still talking about him and again posted the best time in 2’15.24 (slower than at night!). Bruno Shiltz on Suzuki 750 GSR is second in 2’17.66 ahead of Paul-Christian Piazza on KTM 450 EXC in 2’18.59. Carlo Scanu is in ambush in fourth position on this special (2’19.06).

On the second lap of the Mouret special, Mickael Porcu‘s Husaberg 570 FS is still top of the bill with a remarkable time of 1’55.40! He is ahead of Julien Toniutti (1’56.01) and Bruno Shiltz (1’56.93).

Villecomtal, second day pass: still Mickael Porcu in 2’10.70 ahead of Julien Toniutti (2’11.11) and Paul-Christian Piazza (2’12.74).

The loop is still not easy to follow and if the landscapes are intoxicating, you have to pay close attention to following the route. Paul-Christian Piazza drives voluntarily without a road-book reader (why bother the handlebars with superfluous?): He sticks to the wheel of his predecessor, Julien, who opens the way for him.

A 20-minute assistance is granted between each loop, the time to refuel and eat a minimum.

And it starts again for the last lap: the third loop is shorter, after the second special it will take a shortcut to reach the heart of the Dourdou rally, the municipal campsite of Villecomtal.

On the third lap at Mouret, Julien Toniutti, Site rider and KTM France official, obtained the absolute scratch in 1’54.82 on the handlebars of his KTM 990 Superduke! Julien likes records and is ahead of Mickael Porcu on Husaberg 570 FS (1’55.37) and Bruno Schiltz on Suzuki 750 GSR (1’56.12).

Last passage through the Villecomtal special: Mickael Porcu’s Husaberg 570 FS signs the last scratch in 2’10.93 ahead of the KTM 450 EXC of Paul-Christian Piazza (2’11.12) and the KTM 990 Superduke of Julien Toniutti (2 ‘ 11.56).

The shortcut is simple, at the intersection when exiting the Villecomtal special: instead of turning left to start again on the large loop, this time you have to take a right to return to Villecomtal … The section is a dozen of kilometers and must be done in 13 minutes. Julien, knowing that the 13 minutes will pass quickly, does not drag on the way and does not wait for Paul-Christian … who leaves on the wrong side for a few kilometers before realizing his mistake! Bruno Shiltz and a few other drivers will make the same mistake, which will cost them heavy penalties…

In the end, Paul-Christian Piazza was penalized 5 minutes 45 on the day stage (the equivalent of 23 minutes late at the arrival time control), Bruno Shiltz 5 minutes 30 and Mickael Porcu 45 seconds.

Julien Toniutti, who did not take a penalty on this stage, wins hands down the day ahead of Carlo Scanu (Honda 450 CRF) second and Flavien Coitoux (KTM 690 SMC) third.
