Special series: BMW celebrates 30 years of its GS !
In 1980, BMW shook the motorcycle world by releasing a new model: the R 80 G / S. First big versatile trail, the GS has become over time the flagship model of the Bavarian brand: it deserved a special series for its thirty !
It was in the fall of 1980 that the little Matthieu Bretille was born BMW Motorrad presented the R 80 G / S in Cologne … A motorcycle that has since become a legend, because it is at the origin of one of the lines the most famous of motorcycle production: the GS !
"The R80GS is a machine combining two very specific qualities", reminds the manufacturer to the youngest of us:"it uniquely combines road skills, qualities for grand touring and off-roading without sacrificing ease of use on a daily basis".
To prove the efficiency of its new motorcycle – with its 795.5 cc flat twin, its monolever and its telescopic fork, in particular – BMW did not hesitate to enter three motorcycles on the Dakar in 1981: a 3rd edition – back in the days when Dakar was not the Chilean capital! – of which the manufacturer emerged victorious thanks to a certain … Hubert Auriol !
But the G / S – for "gelande / strabe", all-terrain / road – proves to be as effective on main roads as on expressways and town centers. It gradually becomes, and through its many evolutions, one of the flagship models of the BMW range..
It was in 1994 that Frau "Gehesse" reached the status of spearhead of the Bavarian brand when the R 1100 GS landed, a model to say the least innovative: the "Onze-cent" is the first GS to be equipped with the Boxer 4-valve developing 80 hp. This engine also assumes, with its gearbox, a supporting role in the cycle part..
A hell of a cycle part besides, since the guidance system of the Paralever rear wheel is now coupled to the Telever of the front axle! "This system sets new benchmarks in the field and forges the identity of the brand", insists BMW Motorrad. And a little bonus by the way: the R 1100 GS even receives ABS, a first for a trail !
The success became total in 2000 when the 1150 version was born: the GS became BMW Motorrad’s best seller … except in France where the RT was preferred. The famous "Franzosische Exceptzione?"…
Today, thirty years after the release of the 80, the 1200 represents both the must in terms of German production – forget the too Japanese S 1000 RR – and a safe bet for many bikers, whether they are "roll-always" or "commuters" … or both my Captain! (read our). And even in France, by adding the scores of the standard and Adventure versions, the GS exceeds the RT !
Something to arouse the jealousy of other manufacturers … Two of them have also decided to strike hard this year: while Yamaha relaunches the myth of its Super Tenere (test to be continued on Site) and Ducati revolutionizes its Multistrada , BMW therefore remembers the good memories of "its" buyers.
"With the launch of the special "30 Years GS" models of the BMW R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure, F 800 GS and F 650 GS, BMW Motorrad pays tribute to the successes of the GS family in terms of both competition and commercial success", indicates the mark to the propeller…
Hence, you will understand, this choice of retro colors totally assumed: alpine white, blue and red for the saddle, like the original R 80 G / S !
In addition to this tricolor color, the stickers and other markings, we note on the equipment side the presence of hand guards, tinted windshields and engine shields on all models. The three larger ones receive spoke rims while the 650 adopts magnesium spoke rims.
All will be available "from June 1st", informs us BMW Motorrad France. The prices of this special series are naturally revised upwards:"€ 8,930 for the F 650 GS, € 10,810 for the F 800 GS, € 14,860 for the standard R 1200 GS and 15,610 for the Adventure version".
