Monster 1100, big brother of the 696

News - Monster 1100, big brother of the 696 - Used DUCATI

In 2009 a new Ducati roadster will land: the Monster 1100, with an engine derived from that of the Multistrada and with a look very close to the 696. An S version will be available from next year, just like the white colors of the Multistrada S and the Hypermotard…

Two years ago, Ducati presented us the latest version of its Multistrada, powered by a new 1,100 cc twin-cylinder, still air-cooled (read).

Then last year, the Bologna firm unveiled its new little monster in Milan: the 696, whose new "hybrid" frame and updated look had marked the spirits (read).

It is therefore logical that next year will tumble into Ducati dealerships a Monster 1100, a sort of synthesis of the latest Ducati productions….

The new monster

With a bore of 98 mm and a stroke of 71.5 mm, the L-Twin cube exactly 1078cc. Compared to the version fitted to the Multistrada, the "Eleven hundred" of the new Monster adopts "an all-new crankcase that significantly reduces its weight", specifies the manufacturer.

Operating the "Vacural technology used only on Supersport models such as the 848", the transalpine engineers estimate the weight loss at 3 kg! All without losing – or gaining – a single horse: 95 in total which tumble down from 7,500 rpm, or 250 laps earlier than on the old one version.

On the other hand, the pilot must wait for 6,000 rpm to take advantage of the maximum torque of 103 Nm, while on the Multistrada, this same maximum value is reached from 4,750 rpm … Could the Roadster be more "angry" than the road ?

Another major difference between the two engines: the pots, since those of the new Monster strongly underlines the family link between the 1100 and its younger sister 696 !

"The routing of the exhaust system allows optimal positioning of the footrests", further specifies the manufacturer, that the passengers of the S2R cursed somewhat because of the double silencer placed high on the right side….

In fact, the general design of the beast is very largely inspired by that of the small novelty 2008. Thus the big Monster adopts a frame in two parts: that of the top in trellis claims a direct heritage with Ducati Corse – "same thickness and diameter of the 1098R ", insists the manufacturer – just like the lower aluminum one"also derived from the technology of the Desmosedici RR".

The rear wheel is – naturally – suspended from an aluminum single-sided swingarm. It is equipped with a Sachs shock absorber adjustable in preload and rebound. For its part, the front wheel is mounted on a solid Showa fork 43 mm in diameter, fully adjustable..

We note that the design of the two rims gains in finesse compared to the S2R model. "The result is weight savings, precise steering that is extremely responsive at all speeds, while giving the vehicle exceptional stability.", do not forget to recite the Bologna firm.

To perfect its roadster, Ducati has fitted it with radial-mounted Brembo brake calipers which clamp two 320mm discs. Brakes as beautiful as they are effective, and which you will certainly have to be wary of on surfaces lacking grip !

On billiards, however, it should be royal, especially since Ducati reports that the saddle of its 1100 is 40 mm higher (810 mm) than that of its 696. "Thus increased, the ground clearance allows impressive angles", deduces the transalpine !

In town, the new roadster is also devilishly efficient: "the steering stops have been moved back (64 °) thanks to the space freed by the clever air inlets of the tank which feeds the new 10 liter air box", develops Ducat ‘.

On the other hand, the dry weight of the machine was limited to 169 kg, which is 8 kg less than the current S2R 1000. The maneuvers at a standstill will therefore be facilitated … As will the 400 m DA at the red light which leads to the local cafe !

Color level, the Monster 1100 will be available in red (tank and frame), silver (red frame) or black. The date of marketing and the price remain unknown … Until the presentation to the public at the next Intermot in Cologne? Stay connected !

Its S version

For those that the new monster would not entirely satisfy, Ducati proposes its version "S". On this occasion, the Monster swaps its Showa and Sachs suspensions for a fork and an Ohlins shock absorber..

So the fork retains the same size (43 mm), but its more eye-catching yellow color is there to signal the high level of performance of the roadster … The rims themselves also sport a gold color, "which gives it an elegant style and the same sporty look as racing Ducatis", notes the builder.

At the same time, the weight of the "S" is reduced by 1 kg compared to the standard Monster 1100: "aluminum disc frets reduce unsprung weight while carbon cylinder head cover, muffler guards and front fender further reduce weight", lists the press release.

The Monster 1100 S will be available in red or white tank and black frame. Finally, it should be noted that in 2009, the Multistrada 1100 S and the Hypermotard will sport a new white color, "due to the dazzling success of the "Pearl White" finishes introduced with the Ducati 848 and Monster 696", indicates Ducati … They are not crazy these Bolognese !
