New in 2015 EICMA Milan: the BMW trail is called S1000XR
Surprised many times by the villainous-paparazzi-pas-beaux, the new BMW maxisportif trail had no secrets but the name (or almost): S1000XR. Presentation Site from the Bavarian manufacturer’s stand in Milan.
A 160 hp trail
As the saying goes: "never two without three"… Discovered in 2010 on the sporty S1000RR then settled down – but not too much! – on last year, the German 999 cc 4-cylinder is now available on a maxisportive" trail ".
Called S1000XR, it uses the engine of the "Simple R" as it is. Like him then, "it delivers 118 kW (160 hp) at 11,000 rpm and develops maximum torque of 112 Nm at 9,250 rpm", say the engineers of the propeller brand.
The electronic assistance systems are also renewed: the "XR" receives two driving modes (Road and Rain) as standard, as well as ASC traction control, which can be supplemented by the Dynamic and Dynamic Pro modes and by the dynamic traction control ( DTC) via the "Pro control modes" option.
As a reminder, the water mill set to Rain only develops "only" 146 horsepower and reacts more gently to blows of gas. As in Road mode, "the separation of the front wheel during acceleration is eliminated“Dynamic modes, more responsive, allow the rear wheels.
However, it is unlikely that users of this motorcycle will have fun lifting their front wheel all the time on the road. To limit unwanted wheelies, the XR’s sleek swingarm is 65mm longer (670 overall) than the R’s. As a result, potential customers will be more sensitive to another option argument. Pro piloting modes…
With this option, the S1000XR swaps its "simple" BMW Motorrad ABS (partially integral and disconnectable) fitted as standard for the ABS Pro which, "initially, was offered as an option available as retrofit for the top model among the BMW Motorrad hyper sports cars, the HP4", emphasizes BMW.
"Now ABS Pro makes its debut on the new S 1000 XR and, therefore, on a mass-produced motorcycle", welcomes BMW."To determine the angle of the motorcycle, the system uses signals – roll and yaw rate as well as transverse acceleration – provided by all the sensors also serving the dynamic traction control DTC and the ESA piloted suspension. dynamics of the new S1000XR".
The dynamic ESA is another option on which heavy-duty riders attracted by this new version of the 4-cylinder will certainly be eyeing: with it, BMW promises "unprecedented cushioning comfort and extremely stable dynamic behavior, even when the bike tilts in a corner".
But even without electronic control, the suspensions of the S1000XR should provide remarkable comfort, even better than that already satisfactory of the S1000R. Based on the elements of the roadster precisely, the fork and shock absorber of the XR benefit from greater travel (150 mm at the front and 140 mm at the rear).
The aluminum perimeter frame has also received its share of modifications: "the steering head angle is 64.5 °, 0.8 ° less than on the S1000R", reports the Berlin plant,"while the trail is 117 mm, 18.5 mm more than that of the roadster". In total then,"wheelbase increased by 109 mm to reach 1,548 mm".
These significant changes – 11 cm more between the front wheel and the rear wheel is no small feat! – translate according to BMW "by increased traction and directional stability in sporty driving on the road (standard steering damper by the way, Editor’s note), as well as by an infallible heading hold at high speed on motorways, even with two people and with luggage".
For the suitcases precisely, it will be necessary to draw in the catalog of options, "naturlich". And it will unfortunately also be necessary to agree to fix on the rear buckle specific to the XR of ugly metal supports … "Ach", the integrated supports will be for the next time..
A luggage carrier would have advantageously replaced the passenger handles supplied as standard. This element will be part of the Touring pack also including dynamic ESA, heated grips, pre-equipment for navigation system with multi-controller … and the central stand !
A second pack, the Dynamique, will include the Pro piloting mode option (DCT and ABS Pro included), the Shifter Pro, the LED indicators and the cruise control. The latter could well prove beneficial insofar as BMW considers that its adjustable windshield in two positions "as well as the front fairing offer outstanding comfort even in the upper speed range"…
Likewise, the driving position "straight and relaxed allows the rider to ride at all times in comfort and relaxation, while allowing him to adopt a sporting rhythm without having to accept the slightest loss of precision"… MNC can’t wait to check !
As on the roadster, the connection to the ground is provided by 120/70 ZR 17 tires at the front and 190/55 ZR 17 at the rear, while braking is entrusted to the same 320 mm double discs and caliper 4-piston radial mount (AV) and single 265 disc and single piston caliper (AR).
BMW would have been wrong to change it given the compliments of Site about the S1000R! Although it displays 21 kg more than the roadster on the BMW scale, the raised 228 kg version fully loaded should be stopped in less time than it takes to read that end of the sentence that ends there. -now-immediately !
Located at 840mm in height, 26mm more than the "R", the original seat of the "XR" offers no adjustment. It can nevertheless be replaced free of charge, but ex works only by a low version (height not specified).
"When equipped with dynamic ESA", warns Behème,"the S1000XR can also be lowered to make it easier for smaller riders to handle the new sporty adventurer. In this case, the travel is 120 millimeters at the front and 110 at the rear.".
Available in two colors Red "Racing" or White "Lignt", this new BMW will land in French dealerships at a price still unknown: stay tuned !
