Lined gloves in the product test
For the cold season

Budgies love good food, but don’t like the cold at all. Motorcyclists are also not into cold days and therefore need a good lining in tight-fitting winter gloves. Twelve pairs on a test flight through the cold.

It can snow even in Australia. Hard to believe, but at the other end of the world, not only the budgies, which are widespread there, but also motorcyclists freeze during the cold season. In winter they would certainly be happy to have one of the twelve test candidates presented here at hand, even though the temperatures down under rarely drop below ten degrees. Compared to winters in Central Europe, this is of course Pillepalle, and only clear words help at this point: None of the gloves tested and advertised as suitable for winter are seriously suitable for harsh winter conditions with ice, snow and freezing temperatures. And on longer motorway journeys at more than 130 km / h, these “winter gloves” do not warm enough in the long term, even at moderate temperatures of just under ten degrees. But: If you extend the term “winter” to “cold season”, no false expectations arise. After all, things can get uncomfortable on the motorcycle in autumn and spring.

Thickly lined gloves are a must, because driving with hypothermic hands that are restricted in movement increases the risk of accidents considerably. It is also stupid if the gloves are not reliably waterproof – when driving in the rain, wet fins can cool down within a few minutes, which in turn would threaten hypothermia. Fortunately, the competitors equipped with climate membranes showed hardly any nakedness in the wetness test, only that IXS and the Rev’it left some feathers in the water bath or when filling.

Back to the point of safety: If there is actually a fall, the thermal output is not really important. However, the majority of candidates offer decent protection. Great praise! Basically, warm, fluffy padded gloves are not particularly tight compared to normal touring gloves or sporty all-rounders – the anti-slip protection is often inadequate. Except for the Thermoboy and Hein Gericke, who fluff their hands too loosely despite the wrist latch being closed, the manufacturers have apparently done their homework: The parts sit comfortably and still firmly. hero and Vanucci Thanks to a special production technology (X-Trafit or Mcfit), in which the climate membrane is firmly connected to the upper material, an additional significantly better grip feeling, which can almost be classified as sporty. Like that.

Also the Buse, the Rev’it and the Scott want to make themselves popular as “new schoolers” among winter gloves with a sporty, direct grip feeling. However, they are more recommended for Australian winters. With the thickly lined Reusch, which is made entirely according to the old school, you can confidently go on shorter tours in the “high winter” even in this country. Take it easy – because simultaneous motorcycle trips in the Australian summer are more expensive and time-consuming.

Buse Narvic

Providers: Heino Buse, Tel. 02471/12690, www.buese.com
Price: 64.95 euros
Sizes: 7 to 14
Upper material: Cowhide
Leather thickness: 0.8-0.9 mm

plus
Great grip, sporty, crisp fit due to the comparatively thin lining on the palm; supple leather; The cuff is not bulky under the jacket sleeves and can be easily fitted with the efficient Velcro adjustment; Reflectors.

minus
Anti-slip protection only mediocre, doubling of material on fall zones rather sparse, only thinly padded, moderate shock absorption; Indoor climate tends to be sweaty and poorly balanced;
no visor wiper, overall equipment rather modest; Insulation is hardly sufficient for temperatures below five degrees.

Conclusion
The Narvik is offered as a winter glove, but feels like a normal touring glove with a firm grip. The mediocre heat output is completely okay, at least for the transition period or short distances on really cold days. Reasonable price – recommended.

Dane Billund.

Providers: Motoport, Tel. 04451/915210, www.motoport.de
Price: 99 euros
Sizes: XS to XXXL (women: LXS to LXL)
Upper material: Cowhide and goat leather as well as polyamide fabric
Leather thickness: 0.7-0.8 mm

plus
Waterproof, pleasantly cozy lining; Wiping protection properly; can be tucked well under jacket sleeves; Gore-Tex membrane, large wiped leather for cleaning the visor on the left index finger, clearly visible reflectors.

minus
Lowest heat output in the test; Proportions only moderately successful, diffuse grip especially when braking due to the comparatively wide cut and padding on the heel of the hand, annoying bulge formation in the lower thumb area.

Conclusion
Dane without cream – the thermal insulation of this winter glove is only moderate in comparison, and the wide fit creates a very indirect feel. In the rain, the Gore-Tex membrane holds tight, and the well-equipped glove offers solid workmanship and decent fall protection.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Difi Quebec

Product test: gloves for the cold season

Difi Quebec

Difi Quebec.

Providers: Motoport, Tel. 04451/915210, www.motoport.de
Price: 59.95 euros
Sizes: M to 5XL
Upper material: Cowhide
Leather thickness: 0.6-0.75 mm

plus
Comfortable lining; Overall good weather protection; exemplary stripping protection; relatively short cuff can be made tighter and easily fitted under jacket sleeves; Suede as a visor wiper, reflectors.

minus
The metacarpus is wide and fluffy, narrow hands get lost in it, comparatively tight at the ball of the foot, proportions do not fit, fingers too long; rather spongy feeling when braking and operating a switch; Plastic buckle on wrist latch creates pressure point; dries very slowly.

Conclusion
The simple equipment with less well-known materials and no-name membrane gives little reason to rave about it. But the workmanship is decent, the price low and fairly calculated. The equivalent is therefore suitable, especially for occasional winter drivers with a limited budget.

Price: 139.95 euros
Sizes: 7 to 12
Upper material: Cowhide and goat leather as well as polyester fabric
Leather thickness: 0.7 mm

plus
Very high level of security, offers a firm hold, well-fitting, stabilizing ankle protector, perfect protection against stripping thanks to the tightly fitting Velcro wrist strap, abrasion-resistant material (Superfabric) on the balls of the feet; direct and sporty under control; good indoor climate and decent heat output; Visor wiper, Gore-Tex membrane, solid leather, reflectors.

minus
The wiper lip on the index finger does not wipe rainwater off the visor particularly efficiently; thick padding on the ball of the hand and stiff construction (high bending forces) take a lot of getting used to.

Conclusion
Not the warmest, but an absolutely waterproof and very well thought-out high-tech glove with high-end features and workmanship. In terms of price, however, also high-end. In particular, the high level of security and the excellent grip thanks to X-Trafit technology bring the Cold Champ the test victory.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

IXS Nordic

Product test: gloves for the cold season

mps photo studio

IXS Nordic.

Providers: IXS, Tel. 07631/18040, www.ixs.de
Price: 89.95 euros
Sizes: XS to 5XL
Upper material: Cowhide as well as polyester and polyurethane fabrics
Leather thickness: 0.7-0.8 mm

plus
Decent warmth, dries quickly; extra wind and rain protection on gauntlets; cozy lining; Gore-Tex membrane, effective visor wiper on the thumb, reflectors.

minus
Palm cut very wide and wide, throws bulges and creates a very indirect grip on the handlebars and switches; Scraper protection below average; clear weaknesses in the filling test; long cuffs with thick pads can only be put under the jacket sleeves with great difficulty and with great difficulty.

Conclusion
90 euros for a Gore-Tex glove with absolutely sufficient thermal output seems fair. However, security gaps in accident prevention, the poor wetness test result and the spongy feel prevent a good overall result. The IXS, which is available in many sizes, is okay, unfortunately not more.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

plus
Heat output good; very light glove with supple leather on the palm; Cuff fits well under jacket sleeves; highly visible reflectors.

minus

Very wide fit, little finger and ring finger cut too long, plastic-like wearing comfort, quickly sweaty interior climate; moderate stripping protection due to poorly closing wrist Velcro strap, inadequate fall protection in the thumb area; no visor wiper, in terms of equipment and quality only Far East standard goods.

Conclusion
The inexpensive Panthan Evo 5 offers comparatively good weather protection in the cold season, the bottom line is that it hardly has any serious weaknesses in terms of comfort and is therefore worth its manageable price. However, the fit and, above all, the accident protection leave a lot to be desired.

Price: 99.95 euros
Sizes: 8.5 to 10
Upper material: Cowhide
Leather thickness: 0.9-1.1 mm

Best thermal output in the test field with proven synthetic fibers (Primaloft); supple, comparatively thick cowhide leather; pleasant, comfortable to wear, good indoor climate; uncomplicated on and off, tightly adjustable cuff fits neatly under jacket sleeves; Gore-Tex membrane, efficient visor wiper on the left thumb, reflectors.

minus
Size range rather poor; somewhat spongy grip on the padded heels of the hand; Wrist hook and loop fastener with too small an adjustment range, moderate scraping protection, thus limited security.

Conclusion
Your best friend in winter within the test field – it simply warms you best. The price is okay for the equipment with Gore-Tex membrane, especially since good leather and solid design give no reason for criticism. However, accident protection is not up to date.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Rev’it Bastion GTX

Product test: gloves for the cold season

mps photo studio

Rev’it Bastion GTX.

Providers: Rev’it, Tel. 0031/412/696740 (Netherlands), www.revit.eu/de
Price: 149.99 euros
Sizes: S to XZL
Upper material: goatskin and polyamide fabric
Leather thickness: 0.8 mm

plus
Heat output good; Fit (rather slim) with preforming very successful, crisp but comfortable grip, good interior climate; good protection against accidents, abrasion-resistant materials, proper protection against stripping; easy fitting of the cuff under jacket sleeves thanks to good adjustment options; Gore-Tex membrane, long, suitable visor wiper, reflectors.

minus
Significant weaknesses in the wetness test, in the immersion bath strong water penetration on the fingers, when filling it also partly dripped from the test samples; poor processing, lining torn during test.

Conclusion
Very modern interpretation of the “winter glove” theme. The Dutchman is very sporty and pleases with a firm fit. Gore-Tex membrane, Superfabric, good leather – everything is great, but cannot hide the mistakes in the wetness test. Careless processing? Hardly excusable at the high price.

Rukka Mars

Product test: gloves for the cold season

mps photo studio

Rukka Mars.

Providers: Rukka, Tel. 040/5511055, www.rukka.com
Price: 119 euros
Sizes: 7 to 13
Upper material: Cowhide and goatskin
Leather thickness: 0.9-0.95 mm

plus
Noticeably light to wear and good fit, fits tightly, but still offers good comfort, fluffy lining; Cuff can be easily fitted under jacket sleeves; high quality, comparatively thick leather, Gore-Tex membrane.

minus
Features sparse for the comparatively high price, no visor wipers and reflectors; minor leaks during the filling test; somewhat annoying bulge formation on the palm, lining shifts when braking, indirect feeling of grip; Wiper protection could be better.

Conclusion
Not exactly cheap and not exactly well equipped. But the very easy-to-wear glove with Gore-Tex membrane scores points for its acceptable thermal performance and good all-rounder qualities. The smaller weaknesses in the wetness test prevent a place in the front test field.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Scott Distinct 2 GT

Product test: gloves for the cold season

mps photo studio

Scott Distinct 2 GT.

Providers: Scott Sports, Tel. 0041/264601616 (Switzerland), www.scott-sports.com
Price: 119 euros
Sizes: S to 3XL
Upper material: Cowhide and goatskin as well as polyester and polyurethane fabrics
Leather thickness: 0.6-0.75 mm

plus
Good sporty grip, pleasant interior climate; short cuff with good adjustment can be easily stowed under jacket sleeves; Gore-Tex membrane, reflectors.

minus
Cools down noticeably on the fingers at ten degrees and at a country road speed, heat output rather low in comparison; thin leather, fall protection at the edge of the hand too little, wiping protection could be improved; very tight fit, bulky to wear; no visor wiper.

Conclusion
Less suitable for the winter on the bike, but more on skis. On the motorcycle, the heat output is good up to around ten degrees plus, below that it gets hairy. The equipment and workmanship are not bad, but you should expect more with this brisk price announcement.

MOTORRAD verdict: satisfactory

Thermoboy Alaska

Product test: gloves for the cold season

mps photo studio

Thermoboy Alaska.

Providers: Polo, Tel. 02165/8440300, www.polo-motorrad.de
Price: 49.95 euros
Sizes: 8.5 to 10
Upper material: Polyester fabric and goatskin
Leather thickness: 0.6 mm

plus
Fluffy lining; Thermal output and weather protection properly; Adjustment for cuff cuffs is easy to use, even with gloves; Reflectors.

minus
Inadequate protection against accidents, protection against stripping due to the wrist strap that is far too elastic is very poor, in areas where the fall is not sufficiently padded and reinforced very indirect, decoupled grip feeling, fingers lined too thick, therefore low sensitivity for switch operation, sweaty interior climate, thumb seams are uncomfortable; Cuff difficult to fit under jacket sleeves, no visor wiper.

Conclusion
Polo knocks out the Alaska as a special winter offer for a small 50 euros. Occasional riders who don’t plan long tours and are only looking for emergency gloves for cold days are well served in view of the acceptable weather protection – as long as they don’t fall. Because the accident protection is miserable.

MOTORRAD judgment: sufficient

Vanucci winter

Product test: gloves for the cold season

mps photo studio

Vanucci winter.

Providers: Louis, Tel. 040/73419360, www.louis.de
Price: 119.95 euros
Sizes: XS to 3XL
Upper material: Cowhide
Leather thickness: 0.95-1.0 mm

plus
Excellent equipment with efficient heat-insulating synthetic fibers (Primaloft), very reasonable heat output, waterproof; robust, comparatively thick cowhide leather and abrasion-resistant material in the fall zones (Superfabric) offer good protection, good protection against scraping; direct grip feeling; large reflectors.

minus
Somewhat bulging in the finger area, when using switches, the sensitivity is limited; voluminous cuff without extensive adjustment can only be fiddly fitted under jacket sleeves; no visor wiper; Indoor climate sweaty quickly.

Conclusion
120 euros, so the Vanucci is at the price level of premium products – and meets this requirement. The processing with partial gluing of the upper material, lining and membrane is successful, the mix of high-quality materials also fits, only the cheap climate membrane falls off.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Conclusion

Product test: gloves for the cold season

mps photo studio

The final score.

The price differences are enormous, one Rev’it costs as much as three Thermoboy. Is a comparison even allowed? Yes, because it’s okay to save if you only get on a motorcycle a few times during the cold season. Then even the loser in the test is okay, after all, he also warms up quite a bit. For year-round drivers, however, it is worth spending 100 euros and more, because there are similarly large differences in safety as in prices, although more expensive does not mean safer. It hurts in the wallet at first – but still better than aching fingers.

This is how MOTORRAD tests: Testing and cold start

Sounds like a luxury problem: too nice, warm weather. But driving tests at summer temperatures in October are hardly useful. A laboratory test to put the warmth of winter gloves to the test, even earlier. The candidates were provided with a waterproof rubber inlet into which water heated to 60 ° C was filled. The inlet radiates heat, which is mainly insulated by the insulating synthetic fiber material in the glove lining.

A series of measurements was carried out at fixed time intervals. The more the curve determined from the individual values drops, the lower the heat output (apart from winter gloves, normal touring gloves were also measured for comparison). Another important aspect of weather and cold protection (max. 40 points): the wetness test. Two test samples per model were immersed in the immersion bath, and two more samples were filled with water to reveal any leaks. The level of safety (max. 25 points) offered by the glove was revealed by a meticulous examination of all relevant zones at risk in the event of a fall. What materials (tear and abrasion-resistant fabric, leather quality, doublings, reinforcements, padding, protectors) were used, how much support and torsional stiffness does the candidate offer, how tightly does the wrist latch lock? In terms of processing / equipment (max. 10 points), the testers also checked the material quality and appreciated useful gimmicks such as visor wipers or reflectors. Last but not least, a cold start was fortunately still possible: At just over 10 ° C on a rainy mountain stretch, the test drivers did their laps with a lot of braking and coupling processes in order to intensively test the comfort and fit (max. 25 points).

Digital measurement: hot water cools down in the differently insulating gloves over a defined period of time – the slower, the better the insulating performance.

Noticed in driving tests: Experienced outside

It is the small details that you often only notice after buying. For example, a well-functioning visor wiper, which naturally only proves its effectiveness the first time you drive in the rain. Or whether the cuffs can be stowed under the jacket sleeves of the station wagon in order to obtain optimal rain protection. In the driving tests, for example, plugging it in was a mess because of bulky, sometimes very long-cut cuffs with only inadequate adjustment options, for example with Thermoboy or Vanucci. Exemplary fitting, however, for example with Rev’it. Unfortunately, “just slip in” is not enough. Tip: ask in the shop whether a test drive is possible.

Reusch: well-contoured rubber wiper lip with high practical value in the rain.
Rev’it: Velcro and zip adjustment to flexibly fix the cuff.
Held: solid hand protector with a great fit increases rigidity and safety.
Hein Gericke: The wrist strap is too long and doesn’t close properly.
Difi: strangely proportioned – the fingers are given too much air.
Thermoboy: rubber band as a wrist strap? Wiper protection extremely modest!
