Harley is recalling a good 32,000 Sportster models from 2019 to 2021 to replace the bulb cover. Faulty chrome plating can lead to total loss of light.

Call through the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) Harley-Davidson in the USA 31,346 motorcycles of the Sportster range return. The reason is a faulty coating of the bulb cover in the main headlight: Contrary to the specifications, this coating was high-gloss chrome-plated, which can lead to unwanted heat generation, burn a hole in the glass body and thus lead to the total failure of both filaments for dipped and main beam. This affects Sportster models with 883 and 1,200 cubic meters that were built between 2019 and 2021.

According to the NHTSA, there are also 796 headlights that were sold in the replacement business. The component in question was installed in spare parts for the following models:

• Harley-Davidson Sportster 2005-2019
• Harley-Davidson Softail 2005-2017
• Harley-Davidson Dyna 2005-2017
• Harley-Davidson V-Rod 2005-2011

This recall currently only applies to the North American market in the United States and Canada. According to Harley-Davidson Germany, European models are not affected because the models have a different main headlight. However, models imported into Germany or Europe by members of the US Army are subject to the recall.

Conclusion

Recall about too much chrome. Almost absurd in the context of Harley, but: If a reflection in the headlight that is too large can cause the light bulb to fail completely, you will not laugh. German or European models are not affected. But if you got your Sporty indirectly to Germany or bought it from a GI, you should check exactly where the Harley came from and whether it could be affected.
