The provisional road accident report shows a further drop in road fatalities in August, with 299 deaths recorded against 322 in August 2013 (-7.1%). This decrease brings the cumulative balance for the months of and August to -9.5% compared to 2013, ie the best results recorded by Road Safety "since 1948" !

All other indicators are also on the decline, like the number of bodily accidents (-5.2%), the number of people injured (-7%) or the number of people hospitalized "for more than 24 hours. after the accident "(-7.2%).

Motorcyclists who are good students … or scalded by the weather ?

Good news in these times when the two-wheeler is frequently demonized: this decrease is mainly to the credit of the users of motorized two-wheelers. The cumulative results of July and August thus count "15" deaths of mopeds and "37" fewer motorcyclists compared to the same period in 2013. Conversely, 7 additional motorists died in a car accident during these two last months.

Given the harsh weather this summer, it is however to be considered that some bikers have preferred their car to their motorcycle, causing at the same time a "transfer" of the accident. In any case, this is the explanation adopted by the 40 million motorists association, which estimates that this drop could be explained "not only by climatic conditions favoring the use of private cars to the detriment of motorized two-wheelers (hence a sharp decrease in the number of bikers killed), but also by a mechanical decrease in accidents ".

"On this subject, 40 million motorists note that since the Minister of the Interior announced that there would be no general reduction in the reduction of speed limits, we have noticed a reduction in road mortality, which proves that there is no correlation between political decision-making or the implementation of new repressive measures against motorists and the decrease in road accidents ", underlines the ‘association.
