Off to the terrain
In the shadow of its big GS sister, the two-cylinder machine drives straight into the hearts of enduro adventurers, because it is not only suitable for off-road use in advertising brochures.
Thorsten Dentges

Enduro riders are divided into two camps: BMW drivers and everyone else. Machine sympathizers from Japan, Italy or Austria complain about Bavaria bikes: too expensive, too heavy and at all. After a short BMW liaison, the author of these lines actually belongs to this group.

But here’s the confession: What the Bavarians presented in 2008 with the F 800 GS – respect! Economical, elastic series twin with enough thump for the country road (85 HP, between 2500 and 8500 rpm never below 70 Nm torque), stable and handy in every situation, boring motorway stretches with luggage and passengers? Truly fantastic compared to jarring single cylinders.
At home everywhere: sand, mud, forest – no problem at all
So far, so good, almost all 1000cc enduro bikes can do that too. In the field, however, no multi-cylinder machine suitable for touring can hold a candle to the 800 series. With a weight of less than 220 kilograms, blocked draw paths, sand passages, muddy forest paths as well as smaller jumps and drops can be safely mastered, provided that the tires are suitable. Great traction, beautifully appealing suspension elements (230/215 mm front / rear), a stoically forward digging, narrow 21-inch front wheel, seat and tank with a slim contour – you can be very, very fast off-road.
Also stable in value when resold, so the bottom line is: Chapeau! Honda or Yamaha would probably have managed such a Hans Dampf too. But they don’t. So it happens that the BMW F 800 GS poaches unhindered in unfamiliar territory, although technically unchanged at the start with the exception of minor modifications (from year of construction 2013, see model upgrade). By the way, it also recruits drivers in its own warehouse who have their opinion about the big GS: too expensive, too heavy and at all.

BMW
Drives directly into the hearts of enduro adventurers, because it is not only suitable for off-road use in advertising brochures.
The in-line twin cylinder has a long service life with regular maintenance. A BMW F 800 GS can therefore be bought from the hands of normal touring riders without hesitation if it is clean and equipped with ABS (better resale). Be careful – especially with private sales – if the word “terrain” is used anywhere. Off-road use puts excessive strain on the technology: Dust, mud and stone chips – all of which is not good for bearings, suspension elements and plastic parts.
The tires often provide an indication of driving away from asphalt: Continental TKC 80 and Metzeler Karoo are considered the most off-road tires with road approval and are popular with adventurers. Attractive: lots of equipment (heated grips, information display, etc.), travel accessories and aluminum boxes from Hepco & Becker, Touratech or SW-Motech. Particularly popular as an accessory with pure road drivers: the BMW Vario case system.

Market situation
archive
Availability on the market: very high.
The used 800 GS is extremely popular and sells at comparatively high prices. The range is diverse, with a surprising number of private providers offering their machines (with some exaggerated price demands). The rest of the providers: almost exclusively BMW dealers. A trade-in F 800 GS is rarely for sale from non-brand dealers or larger used specialists, and if so, it is quickly gone.
Hardly any offers can be found for less than 6500 euros. Interested parties are most likely to look for bargains in the price range up to 8,500 euros, in other words: copies that are used as little as possible (less than 15,000 kilometers) and that have been checked-in, ABS is mandatory. Private providers can also get rid of their machines at this course.
Especially wanted: the special models. Fully equipped (new value then over 12,500 euros), there is still a buyer for it in good used condition, even more expensive than 9,500 euros.
