Suzuki GSX-R 1000 2006

“Shit, shit … and shit!” the GSX-R thought to itself as it woke up on a sad spring morning. The day before, she had faced the new hypersport horde of the year 2004. A fight to the death against the starving CBR 1000 RR, ZX-10R and R1. A fight from which she came out groggy, hurt in the heart, humiliated: she had just lost her crown of queen of the track. After several years at the top, it hurts to wake up with such a hangover. And to drive the point home, she has also just lost her title of World Endurance champion; GMT 94 R1 has just stung him. So, at Suzuki, we made computers smoke, brains boil, mobilize half of the gray matter of Japan, and we intend to reign again in 2005 – the new GSX-R 1000 is approaching and it is no longer laughing but then not at all !

Although entirely new, the Gex remains a Gex. The colors, the general appearance, we recognize it at first glance – but this new generation will shock more than one. Especially this exhaust from who knows where. “What is that ?” Well … we’re not going to throw stones at them but it’s weird as an exhaust. It does not belong to either of the two schools currently in vogue (traditional on the side or kitsch under the saddle). In short, a new style, halfway between the scooter pot and the kitchen utensil.
The fairing also innovates, in a more cheerful style. The blue upper panel in relief, is of a particular design. It is isolated from the fork crown by the forced air intake duct which is no longer hidden. The optics are modeled on that of the 600 and 750 GSX-R, the tank of a new shape and the rear part seems to come from another time; that of the future. Flashers integrated into the hull, design limit spatio-temporal. It wouldn’t be surprising if Japanese cartoonists watched an episode of Star Trek just before letting the pencil run across the drawing board. Clash of genres, the 1000 is shaking up.

The mill will also shake up. Its bore is increased to inflate the displacement to 999 cm3. Containing in its guts titanium valves and new pistons having lost 8 g, it gains a new injection rail, with butterflies which go from 42 to 44 mm in diameter and a set of 2 injectors per cylinder). Add to that an increased compression ratio to 12.5 (previously 12) and you have a monster.Suzuki GSX-R 1000 2006 which now produces an impressive 178 hp, making the GSX-1000 the most powerful and lightest hypersport in its class. Indeed, the Gex has shrunk even further. 2 kilos lost, and it displays an incredible weight of 166 kgs, that of the GSX-R 750 of 4 years ago. That’s crazy !

And it was necessary to adapt the chassis to exploit all that. Suzuki does not go by 4 ways: new narrower frame of 15mm, new lightened rims of 300 g, hyper-reinforced swingarm (must have taken that of the GSV-R of MotoGP), increase in the diameter of the discs brake to 310 mm (+ 10 mm), modification of the column angle and reduction of the wheelbase (- 5 mm). For the sake of maximum efficiency, the Japanese have further improved the aerodynamics of the bike. The GSX-R is thinner, lower, the pilot is even better integrated – the frontal area has been reduced by 4%.

Some small details should also be talked about, such as the front turn signals integrated in the mirrors, the clutch with torque limiter to reduce dribbling when downshifting or the modified dashboard with a gear indicator engaged. The GSX-R, it will take care of talking, sorry, exploding the times.

His raptor gaze and his technical sheet left no doubt about his personality – furious and fiery. But the approach is, however, a far cry from the approach of a monster. A lower seat than before, a more compact appearance, a slenderness dictated by aerodynamics … The GSX-R does not only weigh the weight of a 600, it claims the size of a 600. It is only 5 kgs from its little supersport sister; the equivalent of a complete Akrapovic line.

If the first big GSX-R of 1986 was a “heavy atom,” the 2005 almost became a free electron. An engine close to perfect, a nervous and very efficient chassis, a behavior at the height of performance and almost untouchable limits, the Suzuki 1000 GSX-R 2005 has never been so close to Superbikes. The 1000 is back, and she’s seriously pissed off !
